I just got breaking news that Jim Leyland is stepping down as Tigers Manager.... It has been confirmed by Jon Heyman.

Really?

I figured he had a few more years left in him.... Did this loss to the Red Sox really take it out of him?

Leyland is old school and never was able to handle the blogs, sports talk radio, or fans in general. Those things aggravated him and at his point in life I think he had enough.

The guy did a good job messaging egos and keeping a team with a good amount of stars from becoming clicks. He will be hard to replace as a team manager. As a game manager the Tigers will be fine as Leyland stuck with his guys way to long.

The only thing the Red Sox took out of him was the ability to go a day with out shaving after seeing how ridiculous it looked.

Do people really think this was solely Jimmy's decision?

What do you mean? He wasnt under contract so tgey could have just not resigned him.

Redseat, have fun getting destroyed in the WS. Unless the cardinals bats slump your team has no shot. Medicore starting pitching and a lineup thats shown they cant hit good pitching. Btw quit trolling first the likns site now the tigers. God, i despise trolls. Go whine some more about the cheatriots getting cheated.

No I do not believe this was all JL decision. He was probably forced out. Tigers going with younger players at SS/LF and pen probably forced JL out. developing younger players not really the strong suit of JL. His strength is massaging the egos of superstars not player development.

I wonder if Dave D becoming commissioner has anything to do with this or if it indicates anything as a new GM would want his guy as manager?

Fun fact:
The 1st game Leyland managed in the majors was against my NY Mets in '86 who went on to win the world series that year....and his last will be against the Boston RedSox who may win the series this yr.

for those of you too young to recall...the mets beat the redsox in the world series in 1986.

I mean he didn't retire, or step down. But he was given respect and got the opportunity to "step down". Which is good. Jimmy's a good man.

Thank god.....now lets hope they dont give the job to geno...

Gibby would be my choice....hell lets bring ausmus back again. What about the pitching coach? Just not geno.....give tram a shot with a good team.....larussa? Ozzie? Trade for melvin from the A's. Anyone but geno.

I would like to see Ausmus. he was rumored to be the Red Sox # 1 choice before they were able to make the trade with the jays for farrell. Scioscia would be my first choice, but is under contract although in a bad situation in LA. Seems to be a run on former catchers like the guy in St louis with not much previous managerial experience. He ( Ausmus)did a great job taking the team from israel to a game of getting into the WBC. Myself I would stay away from the previous detroit guys like Gibby and tram.

Yeah scioscia would be a savior here IMO. too bad they dont fire him....wonder if they need a hitting coach? Or a fat bench coach.....make a trade.

The reason i like gibby besides being a sparty is his fire.....someone needs to light a fire under some of these guys. This laid back "im a veteren" bs isnt working.

Scioscia larussa gibby ausmus ozzie........that order. Francona is who i really wanted. One year too late.

Ausmus will bet the hot candidate this off season. Probably will end up in Detroit or Washington.
