Zach Ertz: Jimmy Graham wouldn't see field for Eagles - NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz's nascent breakout season has stalled since standing among the league leaders in big plays for September.

Coach Chip Kelly explained Wednesday that Ertz's playing time has waned because it would be an "injustice" to take Brent Celek off the field.

"Brent's an outstanding blocker," Kelly said, via NJ.com. "I think he may be the best blocking tight end in the league."\

Of the 61 tight ends ranked by Pro Football Focus, Celek is fourth in blocking.

Ertz not only agrees with Kelly's assessment of Celek's ability, but also went as far as to suggest New Orleans Saints All-Pro Jimmy Graham would find snaps hard to come by in the Eagles' offense.

"Probably not, to be honest," Ertz said, of a hypothetical role for Graham. "I don't want to take anything away from Jimmy, but the things I've seen, he is more of a pass-catching tight end. In this offense we are a run-first team and we don't sub because we go at (a fast pace)."

Kelly is one of the brightest offensive minds in the game. There's little question he would find a way to highlight Graham's mismatch potential if given the opportunity.

Still, the larger point stands that different schemes require different traits, especially in today's era of specialization and multiple personnel groupings.

Ertz is a good player, but he is clearly either seriously deluded or he is simply trolling Graham.

Ertz & Celek together couldn't hold up Graham's jock.

Well, check out snap counts en sech. Graham really isn't a TE. And wasn't on the field as much as one would expect. Even in previous seasons when he was healthy.

Not that anyone would rather have Celek, but I take this as Ertz being a company man. He's an offensive threat, Celek not so much. And Ertz knows why Celek eats up snaps.

Except that Ertz is probably right - Ertz himself is not a a very good blocker, more of a pass-catcher, and he has not seen the field much for that specific reason.

Jimmy Graham might see the field, but then NOT as a TE, and then even not if his blocking is NOT up to Kelly's standards. His lack of effort/blocking skills was one of the things that got DeSean Jackson kicked out. Kelly has repeatedly stated publicly that blocking skills is a very important criterium for getting playing time.

But hey, continue to read something into articles that was never said in the first place if you feel the need to.

I find it odd that a few Packers fans want to continue rubbing Philly's nose in the dirt for a game that happened a week ago, and starting threads about stuff not even related to said game anymore. Therapy might be a good idea at this point.

As for Ertz, it is pretty clear what he is saying, clear enough that even a moron like LambeauLegs should understand. Ertz is whining that he can't get on the field in more than a situational role because he is not a good blocker, and in the Chip Kelly offense, a TE has to be a good blocker to get reps.

To exaggerate his point, he is saying that even the best pass-catching TE in football, Jimmy Graham, probably wouldn't see all the reps in Chip's offense simply because he doesn't block well enough.

Get it? He is not saying he is better than Jimmy Graham you idiot.

Much ado about nothing. Although I can assure you, if Jimmy Graham was an Eagle, he would see the field plenty.

Is Jimmy a good blocking te? No

Does that mean he would be riding the eagles bench? Hell no he would be their 2nd best receiving option (possibly first) along with maclin

At TE he's right. Graham is soft and doesn't block. The eagles run the ball first and foremost....

But Graham would be what he is, a huge WR. Cause thats what he is.... Or so Im told, each time ive seen him in person he's gotten totally shut down.

Do people even read. Ertz is a very good young player that many people predicted to have a big season. With all the injuries to the Eagles OLine this year he isn't getting as many reps because Celek is a great blocker. Ertz is saying Graham wouldn't do a lot on the Eagles cause he doesn't block. Really not to hard to understand. Do you get it now?

He said Jimmy would not play in this system because they're a run first and fast pace team.

Can you read? Do you get it now?

Graham would play. He'd take snaps from Cooper and Huff as much as he'd take snaps from Celek and Ertz.

Graham catches passes, but he's not on the field that much in comparison to real TEs.

Like Greg Olsen, who doesn't come off the field. ASJ plays a higher percentage of plays that JG does, and he's a freaking rookie.

I think one thing that Ertz is missing here is the fact that Graham is one of those few players in the league that you are willing to change your offensive ways to get him more involved. Yes he would not be on the field as much as some TE's because of his lack of blocking ability but you don't let a touchdown machine like Graham just sit on the sideline for most of the game. So I think Ertz has a bit of a point but to me if Graham was on the Eagles team then Ertz wouldn't see the field at all unless it was hail mary time.
