Kane end nhl career after this season? Perhaps? This team more competitive have long term contract and most expire after the next 2 seasons freeing up a lot space for moves. Larkin is Detroit's solid 1C and Compher and Copp are on the verge of top 6 players I regard Copp is Detroit's 2C, we still get rid of the garbage Compher on waivers. I want to keep centers like Motte and Veleno. Rasmussen and Fischer change clubs. Kasper is perhaps a transfer out. Centers I brought up. Outdated Petry off the slopes. Detroit bets on Lyon as first goalie. Like last year, I want at least five changes in Detroit. Finally, I want the transfer Berggren goes to the Rangers and in exchange for Reilly Smith even players we discussed.

I don't think Kane bows out of the NHL after this season. I think if the Wings make the playoffs and are competitive in at least one playoff series, I think there's a good chance Yzerman brings him back on another 1 or 2 year contract. If the Wings miss the playoffs again, I think Kane takes a hard look at other playoff teams as a UFA this offseason.

Other UFAs are Fischer, Motte, Petry and Lyon.
  • Given Cossa's play in Grand Rapids, I'm expecting him to be next year's tandem with Talbot and Lyon will not be retained.
  • Fischer or Motte may be retained; definitely not both, possibly neither. Petry also will not be retained and may even retire. There are too many prospects ripening in GR and SHL to keep re-upping these 4th-line journeyman grinders and old & slow filler D-men.
RFAs are Berggren, Soderblom and Johansson.
  • Berggren could be part of a trade - depending on what kind of moves Yzerman might be considering at the trade deadline and what kind of contract he's looking for from Yzerman. His play has improved under McLellan and he seems happier with his role under McLellan than Lalonde, so I think it's less likely he gets traded than was the case a few months ago.
  • I think both Soderblom and Johansson will be willing to take team-friendly contracts this offseason and will be part of the team next year (at least).
Copp and Compher are both 3C/4C guys and they're both under contract for another few years. They're likely not going anywhere unless via unlikely trade.

McLellen has stated that he's been rolling Kasper on Larkin's line as a wing to help groom him into that 2C role. Kasper is still a rookie who has been steadily building into a solid NHL player. I highly doubt he gets moved unless we see another Elias Petterson-on-the-trade-block type of situation that would be a necessary young NHL-ready prospect moved out for an elite 1C/2C in his prime.

The Yzerplan is all about drafting and developing well while using veteran NHLers to bridge to the guys being developed. (Moving Berggren for Reilly Smith isn't a Yzerplan move.) It was first Seider and Raymond who proved they were ready for the NHL before Yzerman expected them to be - they were the first big pieces of the Yzerplan to blossom. Then Edvinsson proved he was ready last year. This year, Kasper, Soderblom and Johansson worked their way into the lineup. Expect a couple of guys every year to make the jump from GR or SHL into the Wings lineup - slowly replacing those bridge vets with developed draftees.

The three Red Wings prospects I'm most excited about right now are Sebastian Cossa (goalie in AHL), Axel Sandin-Pellikka (offensive defenseman in SHL - will probably start in Grand Rapids next year) and Trey Augustine (goalie in NCAA - will probably be another two or three years before we see him in the NHL, but is already one of the top goalies in NCAA as a sophomore and has already won two World Junior gold medals as the starting USA goalie). Nate Danielson might be ready to move into the Wings' 2C/3C role next year.

Berggren is part of a transfer, the other two Swedes at least Söderblom we keep.
Not sure how familiar you are with NHL contract & salary cap jargon & rules, but "RFA" stands for "restricted free agent". The Red Wings hold the rights to Berggren, but are due to come to agreement with him on a new contract.
  • If Yzerman does not trade Berggren before this season's trade deadline (which is unlikely), he would remain with the team through the remainder of the season and playoffs.
  • In the offseason,
    • Yzerman could possibly trade Berggren's rights. I can't imagine teams are lining up to throw huge money at Berggren or a huge return to Yzerman for Berggren, so this is an unlikely scenario.
    • It is possible another team could file an offer sheet for Berggren (which Berggren would need to sign) - which Yzerman would then either match (to retain Berggren's rights under that new contract) or decline to match - granting the Red Wings that team's high value draft compensation depending on the contract numbers. Also an unlikely scenario.
    • Yzerman and Berggren come to an agreement on a new contract anytime between now and league contract arbitration.
    • Yzerman and Berggren do not come to an agreement on a new contract, Berggren files for arbitration and an independant arbitrator dictates the value of the contract for next season - subsequently making him an unrestricted free agent after next season.

One of those last two things will most likely happen and Berggren will be on the Red Wings roster next season with a role as a 2nd or 3rd line winger who may get some time on the second power play unit. If that 3rd thing happens, Berggren may be in a Wings uniform longer than through next season. If that 4th thing happens, next year will likely be Berggren's last season in a winged wheel.

Likely summer transfer to the Rangers and I want Smith in the opposed orientation.

Yzerman and Berggren come to an agreement on a new contract anytime between now and league contract arbitration.

I who want to Berggren move.

subsequently making him an unrestricted free agent after next season.

Free agent after next season too far away to change. Yzerman's must want to a transfer next summer.
