It seems like every baseball forum has a thread counting down the top 100 players of all time for each poster. While I don't have time for that this morning, I will count down my top 25, and you can all do the same.

Rules:
  • Only stats from the AL or NL count. Nothing from the Confederate League, AA, ***** Leagues, etc.
  • This is a thread for the greatest players of all time, not the greatest players with potential of all time (sorry Roy Campanella)
  • Count contributions for both pitching, hitting, and defense (i.e., you can count how great a pitcher Babe Ruth was)
  • Factor in PED's how you'd like

Here we go:

  1. Babe Ruth
  2. Barry Bonds
  3. Ty Cobb
  4. Willie Mays
  5. Ted Williams
  6. Honus Wagner
  7. Roger Clemens
  8. Rogers Hornsby
  9. Cy Young
  10. Stan Musial
  11. Tris Speaker
  12. Hank Aaron
  13. Walter Johnson
  14. Eddie Collins
  15. Lou Gehrig
  16. Randy Johnson
  17. Mickey Mantle
  18. Mike Schmidt
  19. Mel Ott
  20. Nap Lajoie
  21. Frank Robinson
  22. Rickey Henderson
  23. Greg Maddux
  24. Jimmie Foxx
  25. Roger Connor

I personally didn't have any 19th Century guys except for Cy Young. But why Roger Connor? Stats are obviously difficult for the time, but seems to me like Dan Brouthers was better.

I think Connor is one of the more underrated players of all time. 143 wRC+, and, while like you said it is hard to measure defense in this period, his defense is rated positively by Fangraphs. And the guy had great power to go along with his OBP; .169 ISO in the 1800's.

That 143 wRC+ is still 13 points lower than Brouthers, and his ISO is still 9 points lower than Brouthers. And his ISO is still 5th overall during his career. And he never led the league in OPS and twice led in wRC+. Just seemed like it was high and too much stock would have to be put into grading a 19th century 1st baseman's defense.

I like the list, until I got to the bolded. I believe he has become the most overrated player in MLB history.

That's why he's in honorable mentions, I just threw some names in there, didn't really think much about it.

Also, this might be a good place to put this

1952 World Series Game 7 Dodgers vs Yankees

20 year old mantle, Jackie Robinson, Berra, Hodges, Campanella

I wouldn't have him close to honorable mentions.

I wouldn't mind Brouthers on the list, but I do think Anson is overrated and thus left him off.

I think DiMaggio is a little high and Wagner is a little low, but otherwise, good list

I wouldn't have any of them personally. I was just surprised to see Connor on there so I was checking to see if there was something I was missing.

Pujols not on a single list? These California years have really, really screwed his legacy.

I think he was one of the best pitchers of all-time

I think Pujols is the 2nd greatest 1st baseman of all-time behind Gehrig. He's just on the cusp for top 25 all time and would be on my top 25 of position players.

And I probably should have had A-Rod somewhere on my list. However, I painted myself in a corner because I have Maddux/Johnson as 24/25 and I don't want to push one off the list because I like putting them right next to each other. Two similar results, two completely different styles.
