POLL Your 2020 season expectations

The conversation about "expectations" for this team being too high, too low, etc. really got me intrigued.

I started a poll/thread over on the other Sox board I frequent - asking what their expectations were.

The results (60 some voters to this point) are:

.500-ish record 12.28%

Competitive Wire-to-Wire 50.88%

Playoff berth 22.81%

AL Central Champs 8.77%

Get into post-season and advance beyond ALDS (ALCS or WS berth) 5.26%


"Competitive Wire-to-Wire" gets the nod. More than doubling the voting share of the 2nd place option "playoff berth".

The SportsHoopla White Sox village is a smaller one... but it's certainly loud/opinionated enough. What do you think?

As stated, my expectation is that we are competitive throughout the season.

That if a few things fall our way (namely with pitching) we could absolutely make the playoffs. Possibly even win 90 games. However, if things break against us or simply not in our favor? I absolutely could foresee a 78-82 win season.

Competitive wire-to-wire is the obvious "dipping my toes in" copout answer for this year. Put the same poll up just change the year to 2021. Watch it be 80%+ playoffs or better, with no verifiable proof at the moment.

Competitive wire-to-wire could also be the same answer as ending up .500 for what it's worth...Usually .500ish teams are in the mix for most of the season and just a few things this or that way could bump such teams up a notch.

We're going to end up between 78-85 wins this season is my guess. I would say based on how the Indians do will reflect upon which end of that range we are. We know the Twins will be good...If the Indians are good again, we'll probably be toward 78-82...If they have declined, 81-85. I mean, if they just fall off the map we could catapult higher, but I don't see that happening. Tigers and Royals are going to be doormats and we'll be good enough to take advantage finally...

As for beyond? Not sure...We could float or fly...I'd hold off on sending in the parade banner orders or playoff ticket pre-orders for the time being though. So many factors, the most important two being our growth and what happens with our competitition. Based on the Twins and Yankees alone (I don't know what to think of the Astros right now)-much less any other teams near the top-I'd say we're gonna have a rough road even if everything clicks.

at least you're not alone.

i do predict a better future, tho considering, that's not saying much. whether they reach the playoffs .. that's another story. with the sox abysmal track record it won't surprise me if that doesn't ever happen again under this ownership.

owner: terrible.
coaching: terrible, system-wide.
attendance: terrible.
uniforms: current, pretty good. 1982 the worst in sox history!
gm: still a question mark.
players: only potential. i have discovered over the years potential seldom bears fruit. out of 'the big 4" i'll be surprised if two become what sox fans hoped for. one is more likely.
pitchers: only potential. added 2 geezers and the rest untested with maybe the exception of giolito and he's certainly no given. he's had 1/2 of one good year.

I went with the competitive/not quite get there vote. We'll be a good team this year, but I'm guessing that we'll fall short of making the postseason. I sure hope I'm wrong on this.
