This is an interesting comparison based on popular opinion vs the metric impact, the two catchers had on the game.
Russell Martin has a good chance to be one & done on his HOF Ballot, while Yadier Molina has a good chance to be a First Ballot Induction.

bWAR/162>Russell Martin 3.7>Yadier Molina 3.1

Yadier will sail into the HOF but he really shouldn’t be so locked in. The whole place is a joke anyway until B and C get in

Molina is also interesting... He had some decent offensive seasons... but overall you look at his numbers and you have to understand he is not making the HOF because of his bat... even with accumulating some stats... sure it helps he played for so long, so his numbers dont look THAT bad...

But he is clearly making it because of his defense AND the postiion scarsity...

thats why comparing him with others is just not really going to be fair...

Martin, was good defensively, but not HOF level good... so he would have to make it because of his bat... and that too is just not good enough...

I'd put Molina in over Martin, but they're a lot closer than the average fan thinks they are. I'd say Martin is better than people think and Molina isn't as good as people think.

idk if i agree... its just an understanding that Yadier does not make it to the HOF becasue of his offense...

Martin is 3rd among all catchers at FanGraphs with 301.9 defensive runs
Yadier is the top defensive catcher at FanGraphs with 373.8 defensive runs
Martin 301.9/1693g=.1783x162g=28.9 per 162-games
Yadier 373.8/2224g=.1680x162g=27.3 per 162-games

Once again Martin’s metric defensive value is similar to Yadier’s per season but longevity of 531 more games which is equal to 3.3-seasons is very valuable.

Here is a screenshot of FanGraphs value chart for catchers. The dollars at the far right is how much a player would cost through free agency. (I think : )

Let's remember Buster Posey is >> than both

If he's not first ballot like Mauer they should burn the place down.

Sure he's a better first baseman than both of them, but the guy is 100th in career games caught. He doesn't have the longevity that Molina and Martin have to claim he's a "better catcher"

Yeah? You mean the guy with the most No-Hitters, most career strikeouts, and was effective into his age 45 season? Absolutely. You don't know ball, it's alright. You can just say you're a blind homer with no actual good rebuttal. dumbfuck

He’s maybe had the 25th or so best career for a pitcher in history

Based on? WAR he's 20th. But if we're only going on WAR and not adjusting for the era that they played, then we could just build the list purely on WAR and have zero debate.

Buddy I love Buster (I'll always support an FSU player), but to say he's a better CATCHER than Yadi or even Russel Martin is just false. Mauer also isn't a better catcher due to his lack of innings/games caught. He's a much better hitter, there's zero percent of me that would debate that even if I had a dozen cold ones at the game. Posey is a HOF'er and if he's not first ballot, it's comical. My only point was he's not the better catcher

Nolan Ryan has won exactly as many Cy Young awards as I have.

He was a unique and exciting player, all those strikeouts and no hitters and fireballing into his 40s. I'm a fan. But his actual pitching results were not that great. All time leader in walks, barely above .500 record. ERA+ nothing special, high WHIP (due to the walks), etc.

I mean, ok? I know he didn't catch as many games as some of these guys but he caught far more than Mauer, and played the position very well. He just decided to retire young after one of his best seasons.

We totally agree on the bolded, all I was saying here is Posey deserves being the Hall more than Martin or Molina, or Mauer.

It seems like you got a lot of takes that involves the hall of fame being a joke, burning the hall down, etc. I hope they have metal detectors in that place......

Nolan Ryan leads ALL SP at Baseball Prospectus since 1950 in WAR with 157.86 and his prorated DRA- of 59 is only bested by Pedro’s 54 NoNo Ryan’s DRA(deserved run average) of 2.47 is also tops. IMG_1564.png
