i don’t mean to be a shrill for The Athletic, but if you haven’t used up your trial reads, here is another great human interest story - this one on Will Parks.
'If I didn’t have football, I’d be dead or in jail': Why...
Brief summary; Will grew up in Philadelphia and the story begins with his uncle being shot and killed three months ago as he waited for a bus to go to work. He estimates that he has had 10-12 family and friends killed and has personally seen people killed in his neighborhood. He has several family members spending life sentences in prison.
He’s now working on an anti violence campaign to try and reduce the number of guns on the streets in Philly. Always good to see players using their influence to help in seemingly hopeless situations. I’m sure of one thing - he won’t “solve” the violence problem, but if he can be part of saving a life, or two, or three it will mean more than anything he ever does on the football field - including creating a fumble at the goal line to save a game!
