They are discussing it, but they haven't had a need to yet. The team has about 8 guys who are displaying Captain-like behaviour.

I honestly think they were waiting for Horton to get settled before making the decision.

Dubinski
Pro - Plays with fire. Very vocal. Accountability is his middle name
Con - Prone to passion penalties. Hard to lead from the penalty or press box.

Jack Johnson
Pro - Smooth, not overly excitable, good role model, can get in a guy's face when the situation calls for it. Has stepped up 10x since being snubbed for Sochi.
Con - His play before the snub

Ryan Johansen
Pro - Great player, always upbeat. Can play in any situation. Star of the team
Con - He's young. And the Jackets learned what just giving the C to your best player does.

Ryan Murray
Pro - Plays veteran shifts as a rookie. Has made mistakes, but never makes mistakes twice. Well liked, speaks up when it needs to be said
Con - He's a rookie. He will Captain this team in 3 or so years for a LOOOONG time.

James Wisniewski
Pro - Exemplifies what this team is. Scrappy, workmanlike. Upbeat and will stand behind any teammate.
Con - If he sneezes in the vicinity of Brendan Shanahan he will be suspended for 8+ games. Also prone to passion penalties.

Nathan Horton
Pro - Been to the top of the mountain. Infectious optimism. He wants to be on this team and in this city. Coaches have said that they are learning from him. He's not just helping the players, he's helping the coaches. Jackets have only lost 4 games since he returned.
Con - He's new. No one cares about that though.

Foligno
Pro - Heart and soul guy. Bobrovsky's biggest fan and motivator. Everyone likes him. Will paly wherever he's told with nary a whimper.
Con - He's probably better suited just being himself without the extra pressure.

MacKenzie
Pro - The elder statesman. Strong voice, and lots of energy.
Con - Injury prone. Plays 4th line minutes

Mark le Test Tube
Pro - Has been successful in his career. Energy guy. Never quits
Con - 4th line minutes.

My guess:
C - Horton
A - Johnson, MacKenzie, Dubi, Wiz, the Test Tube and Foligno (in rotation)

Might as well give it to Horton then.

I said it when Duby was traded there, eventually it will be him. Still stand by that.

NHL captain is so overblown in this day and age. Do you think these millionaires with guaranteed salaries really listen to a guy because he has a letter stitched to his chest?

What really matters is that your best players have a solid work ethic and lead by example. Columbus has that right now, so why should they care about naming a captain?

If captaincy isn't important might as well give it to Ryan Murray, if they believe he will be the future of the franchise.

I do believe that some guys due lead by example as a Captain or Assistant of a team. I know Cally, Richie and Staalsy do. Many players have said it, and still stand by it. Albeit, may be different in each locker room, but take this for example. When Richie came here and was named an Assistant, he started ''The Broadway Hat'' awarded to a player who played the best game that night in a win. Something that has been now going on for 3 seasons and has brought the team closer together. Some guys do lead by example and now you're starting to see other teams take on that Broadway Hat role. Saw the other night Dallas does a ''Cowboy Hat'' to their best player after a win.

Not saying Benn or even Horcoff may have started it, but with the right team and the right leader, yes some can lead by example and set the tone for a team.

Agreed, the C is very important in Pittsburgh as well. Can't speak for Columbus tho.

:agree:

What's more, that work ethic goes through the team, all the way to the goalies. The team is self accountable, so they don't need a fire and brimstone guy on the bench and in the locker room. Lazy teams need that.

More people outside seem concerned about it than the guys in the room. The only time it would really matter is if a certain shiny trophy is being presented, one guy needs to go get it.

If that becomes a problem, it's a good problem to have.

I think it's gonna be Horton. Dubi is a great player and a heck of a leader, but it seems the Jackets are a little concerned about his hot-headedness. I think the reason they haven't slapped it on Horton from the beginning is they were worried about hurt feelings on guys like Johnson and Dubi. I really don't think they care.

i agree w/ the folks that say the captaincy is overrated. as long as you have guys that lead by example and guys that are outspoken in getting the team to work hard, it doesn't matter who has what letter.

i think the sports media spends more time talking about who is the captain than anyone affiliated w/ the team.

i really don't think it is that important in pittsburgh. they could put the C on olli maata and crosby is still going to be the hardest worker on the ice and players are going to follow that example.

Actually...taking it away from Sid may only make him more fierce. GET ME DAN BLYSMA!

*remembers the ridiculousness of "take away the C" rumors from when Sid was hurt*

Nevermind.

It makes a huge difference when you don't have that though.

When Nash was the captain, I was begging for anyone to step up and take that lead. Great player. Not a captain.

The "C" itself doesn't matter but the way Sid conducts himself as a captain does matter. Kunitz & Dupuis wouldn't have re-signed with the team but for Sid being Sid. I think the captaincy and the role of captaincy varies from team to team, player to player, & captain to captain. But speaking as a Penguin fan I can attest that the captaincy is very important in Pittsburgh and we do look to our captain to lead by example & sometimes carry us on his shoulders.

I think on younger teams the C is important. I think some younger guys won't speak up as much, so you need a guy who has basically been tabbed to speak up.

True true, and older team isn't as likely to rely on their captain as much as a younger team.

Look at Colorado, with the youngest Captain in the history of the NHL in Landeskog.
