NHL captain is so overblown in this day and age. Do you think these millionaires with guaranteed salaries really listen to a guy because he has a letter stitched to his chest?
What really matters is that your best players have a solid work ethic and lead by example. Columbus has that right now, so why should they care about naming a captain?
I do believe that some guys due lead by example as a Captain or Assistant of a team. I know Cally, Richie and Staalsy do. Many players have said it, and still stand by it. Albeit, may be different in each locker room, but take this for example. When Richie came here and was named an Assistant, he started ''The Broadway Hat'' awarded to a player who played the best game that night in a win. Something that has been now going on for 3 seasons and has brought the team closer together. Some guys do lead by example and now you're starting to see other teams take on that Broadway Hat role. Saw the other night Dallas does a ''Cowboy Hat'' to their best player after a win.
Not saying Benn or even Horcoff may have started it, but with the right team and the right leader, yes some can lead by example and set the tone for a team.
Agreed, the C is very important in Pittsburgh as well. Can't speak for Columbus tho.

i really don't think it is that important in pittsburgh. they could put the C on olli maata and crosby is still going to be the hardest worker on the ice and players are going to follow that example.
i agree w/ the folks that say the captaincy is overrated. as long as you have guys that lead by example and guys that are outspoken in getting the team to work hard, it doesn't matter who has what letter.
i think the sports media spends more time talking about who is the captain than anyone affiliated w/ the team.
I think on younger teams the C is important. I think some younger guys won't speak up as much, so you need a guy who has basically been tabbed to speak up.
