Will a move to Richmond become an NFL problem?

There's a fair amount of speculation about a move to Richmond. Beyond the name change or land issues there just might be a much larger issue looming for the NFL if the team moves to Richmond where it is likely to give up a fair share of the 8th largest media market and equally likely to lose its' base name.

Becoming the Richmond Whatchamacallit's could be problematic for the NFL, a league where sucking every available cent from every imaginable stream is the ideal. First there's the vote approving such a move, ( I'm pretty sure Baltimore will favor it) then the loss of a marketing favorite "Washington" in favor of the much lesser "Richmond" and what that will do to the bottom line. Next we have to consider expansion, make no mistake, any move outside of the beltway will immediately bring both politicians and NFL
scavengers....oops....owners into one voice calling for a new team within that boundary. Keep in mind that L.A by expansion will create an imbalance or if another team moves there create an availability in the losing market. Lastly, for better or worse Virginia is an "Right to work" and "At will" state, and that opens up a whole new set of problems for the NFL and their employees.

I personally believe that Richmond is not a viable option, but it will be used to garner a much better deal at the current site, in DC, or at a site very, very, close to DC in Northern Virginia. All well within the Beltway. There are quite a few on this site alone, who are outwardly in favor of a move to Richmond. Here's hoping that there's an effort to stay on topic, there will be many more opportunities to attack the messenger.

1. The team is based in Virginia right now, so the whole right to work thing poses no problem as most of the team lives in and pays taxes to the state of VA, and I dont see that changing.

2. NO matter where the team moves, the name will remain REDSKINS.. embrace it man.

3. Even if the home stadium is in Richmond, ( and Im actually thinking the team HQ moves there and the stadium ends up some where in the barren waste land between DC and Kings Dominion) the team would still be called the Washington Redskins (again hug the name man).

4. Dan Snyder would be a fool to cave to the DC Gubment and change the name in order to move into a cramped stadium with inadequate parking.

5. NO one who can afford season tickets wants to go to a Monday night game where their ride will get damaged or worse, and then have to sit in 1.5 hour traffic jams to get OUT of the area.

Not a Skins fan, but I used to go to 2-3 Skins games a year just because I like the NFL.

This is why I refuse to go to games in Landover now.

Where exactly do you propose inside the Beltway? Anything east of the Anacostia River out Suitland Parkway or 50 is really no different than Landover, unless they do some major infrastructure changes. To the north/west in Maryland you have College Park and Silver Spring, and then Bethesda where I can't really imagine them putting the stadium. Clearly it wouldn't be ARL County or McLean...
I guess that leaves that area between Alexandria and Annandale to the south of the city where 395 and 95 meet - none of which is really Metro accessible.

Long story short, if a new stadium isn't at the old RFK site, I think the chances of it going inside the Beltway anywhere are slim. They're not going to build another one in Maryland, so realistically, out in the suburbs of NoVa or (on your way to) Richmond are viable options.

Again, ladies and gentlemen this is about the problems that the NFL would potentially face if this team moves to Richmond.

1. The NFL has a union right now, that ultimately will get challenged by an anti union player living in a "Right to work" state.

2. Don't count on it!

3. Do you honestly believe that the "Washington" part of that will be allowed if they actually leave the common region? Good luck with that!

4. Another interesting argument. We've had 15 years of his foolishness. There's no precedence to expect anything more.

5. There are any number of solutions that can be employed to handle the transportation issues. Besides the DMV has the 2nd worse traffic in the nation. I'm pretty sure that they are well aware of that. There is one more tidbit that must be considered here. With gentrification in full gallop, by the time the stadium is finished in DC (I'm thinking children's Island will be part of that) a great number of fans going to the games will also live in DC.

I'm not sure a move to Richmond would necessarily be a terrible thing. I would definitely support it. Contrary to what some may believe, Richmond (and the surrounding area) is a very large metro area in its own right. Parts of what is considered NOVA (Fredricksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, etc.) would be as close or closer to a Richmond area stadium anyway. A stadium in Richmond would make games much more accessible from Tidewater, other parts of VA, The NC triangle and so on. Bottom line is, selling out games and season tickets will never be a problem. Furthermore, the Skins are supposed to be "Virginia's team", so why not move to what is the center of Virginia. Are all of the diehard NOVAs gonna start pulling for the Ravens if Danny Boy moves out of town? Some...but not most. 99.9999% of people who live up there watch the games on TV and do not go to the games. They will still watch the games on TV and yes the games will still be aired on TV up there.

I honestly don't think the NFL cares where the franchise it at. NFL football is the undisputed champion with reference to TV. If people arent watching the Redskins, they will be watching the Ravens, Iggles, or someoen else. Name change?? Not sure I really care that much about that either. But I am sure Snyder would like to keep the name as is (if possible) if a move was made.

Just my 2 cents...

you said it perfectly . i dont see any downswing to anything . that doesnt mean richmond is my destination of choice . all it means is that its possible . i grew up in stafford county right nere the city of fredericksburg itself . i vist my mother and father in va beach and they see every redskins game and get comcast and see every single skins Tv show you get in dc .

also the tidewater area is the fastest growing area in va so revenue wont be an issue . most people in fredericksburg arent /cant make it to landover . i dont see that is any different if marylanders not making it to richmond . however they could cut time off over the potomac river bridge and come out at ashland

They're not moving to Richmond, that's absurd. It's 100 miles from DC along one of the heavily traveled portions of Route 95. On Sunday's, it's often 2.5 to 3 hours. Ain't happening.
