This is not to bash the current turmoil that surrounds the Big 12, yet again.

This is to show why Academic Research more than offsets any Athletic Department Revenue, and not by just a little, by a LOT. Nebraska's Academic Research has gone up EACH and EVERY year since joining the B1G. Coincidence or the CIC effect?

Once Nebraska gets full B1G shares, then it will be even more.

Nebraska left the Big 12 in 2011. Because of that, the Big 12 held back the $9,000,000 that Nebraska would have been paid in 2011. In 2012-2013, the Big 12 schools received $7,000,000 more than Nebraska, of course Texas received another $11,800,000, on top of that. But I am not comparing Nebraska to Texas, I am comparing Nebraska to the other NINE schools in the Big 12.

The Big 12 fans will talk how their conference payout makes them superior. Wrong. How about you factor in the Research and Development Dollars, and the CIC has a lot to do with this.

In 2010, Nebraska had $191,000,000 in Research & Development. In 2015, Nebraska had $278,300,000. An increase of roughly 45%. If you add in the increase EACH YEAR since joining the B1G, Nebraska has added $268,000,000 from the Academic Side.

On average, I am going to assume that the Big 12 schools made $7,000,000 more per year for five years, that is $35,000,000 more each Big 12 school brought in than Nebraska from Athletics.

Now, let us add up the research dollars + $35,000,000 more each school in the Big 12 has brought in. Remember, the $35,000,000 is what I am averaging each Big 12 team brought in from Conference Payouts that is MORE than Nebraska. If Nebraska brought in $50,000,000 over five years from conference payouts, then each Big 12 team brought in $85,000,000. I am negating the $50,000,000 since each team brought that in and I don't want to add it up. Yes, Texas brought in a lot more.

Now, you will understand why academians are more into R&D, which is where the big money is at.

Oklahoma increase from academics and athletics = $160,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
Iowa State increase from academics and athletics = $141,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
Kansas increase from academics and athletics = $126,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
Kansas State increase from academics and athletics = $108,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
Texas Tech increase from academics and athletics = $94,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
WVU increase from academics and athletics = $78,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12 and WVU joined in 2011
Baylor increase from academics and athletics = $40,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12
TCU increase from academics and athletics = $33,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12 and TCU joined in 2011
Oklahoma State increase from academics and athletics = $28,000,000 since Nebraska left the Big 12

Nebraska has brought in $268,000,000 just from Academics

Take the $268,000,000 minus each schools number(which includes the difference that each Big 12 team brought in OVER Nebraska's B1G payout in Athletics)

Nebraska has $108,000,000 more than Oklahoma.
Nebraska has $127,000,000 more than Iowa State.
Nebraska has $132,000,000 more than Kansas. More than TWICE what Kansas brought in.
Nebraska has $150,000,000 more than Kansas State. More than TWICE what Kansas State brought in.
Nebraska has $174,000,000 more than Texas Tech. More than TWICE what Texas Tech brought in.
Nebraska has $190,000,000 more than WVU. More than THREE TIMES what WVU brought in.
Nebraska has $228,000,000 more than Baylor. More than SIX TIMES what Baylor brought in.
Nebraska has $235,000,000 more than TCU. More than EIGHT TIMES what TCU brought in.
Nebraska has $240,000,000 more than Oklahoma State. More than NINE TIMES what Oklahoma State
brought in. Let that sink in, NINE TIMES.

Oklahoma State is so bad, their R&D was actually NEGATIVE from 2010 to 2015.

Once the B1G money starts coming in at 100% plus the Academic R&D growth that is happening, Nebraska as a University will be easily surpassing any other school in the Big 12 not named Texas.

This is why Nebraska joined the B1G.

I just did Texas. Just don't look at the actual 2014 R&D dollars when it is $585,000,000 for Texas-Austin and $278,000,000 for Nebraska.

Academics Texas brought in $106,000,000 more for the past four years and I will go with ($19,000,000 * 5 years) for the conference payout + LHN monies, which is $95,000,000

Add that up and it is $201,000,000. Nebraska brought in $268,000,000.

Nebraska actually gained more money in Academic Research than Texas did over the last four years from R&D + Big 12 payout + LHN. Nebraska actually doubled up on Texas in R&D during that time. Of course, when you have a larger number getting big increases becomes harder and harder.

You have to think that B1G targeted schools are able to do their own math and see that conference payouts are nice, but research dollars are really going to help Universities. I would have to think Kansas or Oklahoma or Virginia would be very interested in a pitch from the B1G and how their R&D could increase. Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Duke not so much since they are all over $700,000,000 in R&D.

The Big 12 could do themselves a big favor by getting Cincinnati and Colorado State, if academics is TRULY important to the Big 12. Isn't that what was said during the formation of the Big 12?

Sometimes mentioned Big 12 Expansion Candidates
Cincinnati $423,000,000
Colorado State $308,000,000
UCONN $258,100,000
New Mexico $229,000,000
UCF $186,000,000
Tulane $157,800,000
Houston $140,600,000
Mempis $55,600,000
BYU $38,050,000
Boise State $26,600,000

The B1G is (IMO) the best overall conference set up. I will say as well, the SEC has it's advantages, so they are 1A & 1B in my mind, the other conferences are really irrelevant.

Since I like tracking numbers

Since leaving the Big 12 in 2010-2011

Nebraska has INCREASED R&D by $372,000,000 from academics since joining the B1G using 2010 as the base line.

Nebraska is one of the few Universities that has shown an increase in each and every year since 2010 in federal dollars R&D.

Iowa State has not
Kansas has not
Oklahoma has not
Kansas State has
Oklahoma State has not
West Virginia has not
Texas Tech has not
Baylor has not
TCU has not

2016 (this does not include UN Medical Center, see below)
Nebraska R&D $294,856,000 +10,000,000

Iowa State $328,385,000 +22,000,000
Kansas $297,933,000 -14,000,000
Oklahoma $259,998,000 +18,000,000
Kansas State $193,354,000 +4,500,000
Oklahoma State $183,799,000 +42,000,000
Texas tech $172,521,000 +8,600,000
West Virginia $172,477,000 +2,300,000
Baylor $26,767,000 +2,100,000

Creighton $23,510,000
UNO $10,500,000

TCU $6,600,000 -1,400,000

UN Medical Center $150,694,000 +5,500,000

Nebraska is still the laggard in the Big 10.

B1G conference payouts that Nebraska received from the B1G
June 2012 $14,000,000
June 2013 $15,400,000
June 2014 $16,900,000
June 2015 $18,700,000
June 2016 $22,000,000
June 2017 $26,000,000

$123,000,000 from conference payouts

Add that to the $372,000,000

That is $495,000,000 in an increase in revenue since leaving the Big 12 and joining the B1G,

Divide that by 6 years, and that is $ 82,500,000 per year.

I'd like to see a comparison of what Nebraska 'would have' received if they'd stayed in the Big 12 to what they've received from the Big 10 since leaving.

i.e. How many years to break even on the move.

It's obviously a runaway train going forward.

The breakeven for athletics is as seen above, should be FY 2019 or paid in June of 2020

Now, the numbers I have were from the OWH for Nebraska which do not make sense. I just went with their numbers because what do I know, I went to Colorado School of Mines.

Nebraska was supposed to receive 90% of payout of 2017 for 38,500,000 = 34,650,000. The OWH said $26,000,000.

I personally believe the breakeven was FY 2018, or this calendar year of 2019.

Nebraska received $185,470,000
Big 12 paid out $180,800,000
