Right.

But these are conversations aimed a specific position or skill.

In the NBA. the GOAT conversation is usually about who is the greatest overall player of all time.

Not GOAT center, GOAT scorer, GOAT ball handler.

Just GOAT.

that was just how i worded it though...

also wanted to include all 4 sports...

the football argument always always puts the QB as the best player... so the best QB debate, is generally the best player debate...

baseball, i only included Judge to show that the debate is happening now, and his career is still incomplete...

same thing with hockey... Ovechkin is the new scoring king, and can now seen as the best scorer of all time... but he is nowhere near Gretzky in points...

others like McDavid and Crosby have a better argument...

the problem in the other sports is that the GOAT is so ahead of any current players... that is why we talk about it in the NBA, because Lebron is ACTIVE....

Brady is definitely not the de facto GOAT IMO.. I'd put Peyton Manning above him as far as being the best QB in the league for a longer period of time.
That's a discussion but still most believe it's Brady other than those who just don't like him.

i dont agree with you at all that the GOAT conversation is predominantly an NBA topic... all sports have their talk...

in the baseball boards there is a question whether Judge is the best right handed hitter ever...

in the hockey boards, there is an ovechkin the best scorer debate

in football we constantly have the best QB talks...
You kind of made his point as in no other sport did you mention overall GOAT talk.....just at a certain position/category.

The so-called goat debate in the NBA was never this prevalent and toxic until the media crowned this certain vainglorious team hopper as their chosen one and just planted his ass right next to Michael Jordan in the convo. Dunkin beat him twice. Steph beat him 3 times! He never made it to face Kobe in the finals with 3 chances. But, let the lemedia tell it, for many years he's been above all of them as well as Kareem, Russel, Magic, Bird and MJ!! Before this clown, fans stated who they thought was the best ever but still respected the greatness of other players that were in the convo. This need to trash and disrespect all-time greats or previous eras was never a thing like it is today with that dude's Klutch agents, paid media puppets and sheep-minded fans.

Yawn. What a fresh take from a first timer. No one has ever taken this angle before.

Basketball is the only sport where sheep minded fans actually believe that prior generation players are better than modern generation players.

Flies in the face of all common sense and logic. Humans get better at things over time.

… said noone ever.

It’s comparing what people were in their era, and how dominant they were amongst others with the same conditions.

You can’t rip people out of time and expect to be considered curious and respectful of history on the subject, but that’s what you do. It’s so odd.

Actually a lot of people here have said that and believe it.

That’s nice.

Even though todays powerlifters can lift more than those of previous generations, a lifter from the previous generations can be the GOAT because of how dominant they were

That is one way to look at it.

Certainly not the only way.

I don’t really place a ton of value on a dominant player in a non-competitive era.

I'm sure you have seen it before from posters that have been here since day one. It's not rocket science, it's common sense. But it's still not gonna open or change any minds. People reject logic and facts to support what they favor every day.

You need to read the comment again if you saw anyone say "prior generation players are better than modern generation players". Because I didn't. They have every advantage over previous players. My thing is, this new generation with their much more money, better sports medicine, better training techniques, much better shoes and gear, supplements and therapy, don't need to shit on previous eras to convince people of anything. Nothing wrong with them being better, but they don't have to diminish previous eras to lift up certain current players.

Common sense is something widely accepted as fact. This is not.

I know lol. To me that’s crazy though. Every player is only able to succeed with the training, nutrition, knowledge, and supplements available to them at the time. If I put Lebron James back in 1950, but didn’t give him any modern trainnng besides a 1940’s-50’s regimen, he wouldn’t be nearly as good as he is today.. same with MJ, Magic, etc. and likewise if you trained Wilt or Bill Russell with todays knowledge and strategies, they’d be way better than they were when they played

It might not be fact, but if you value winning in the true spirit of sport and the integrity of the game, you would not be ranking a player like Lebron "I want my damn respect too" James as the best player ever. But, it is what it is.

To a certain extent yes.

But LeBron at age 15 was better than anybody from that era. Was already hitting his head on the rim.

There just wasn’t a player anywhere near that level of freak until Wilt entered the league.

You don’t know that.. there has always been physical freaks.. they just didn’t have any skill back then.

Meanwhile, Lebron was surely training with modern tactics by age 12, 14 at the latest.

There were not physical freaks anything close to LeBron in the NBA in the 40s.

And you know this.

Or the 50s...Wilt is closest, he started in the NBA in 1959 (was on the Harlem Globetrotters the year before I just learned)
