Why did Pats release Hoyer instead of trading?

I thought the implications warranted it's own discussion.

It seems there was value to be had from Hoyer. Colts could have traded a sixth or seventh rounder and saved millions. Were there any other suitors?

Did the Pats release him as a statement? For all the complaints about the Patriot way, was Bill saying "Do right by us and we'll do right by you"?

Recently there has been many examples of this but Trent Brown comes to mind. He came in with little expectations and left the highest paid lineman ever - for one year.

Who else has won big with the Patriot way?

Well, when Bill traded Jimmy G to San Fran he could have included Hoyer in that trade and absorbed his existing contract.
But he didn't and scooped him up for less money after he was released.
So one could speculate that the Colts were thinking the same way and were not going to trade a pick for someone who would be released anyway.
Also, by being released Hoyer is free to ask for whatever he wants (More for the Colts?) rather than be obligated to play for his Pats friendly contract.
Maybe Bill did him a solid, maybe Bill cared less and Hoyer just got lucky.

Colts also have a crap ton of cap space and may have determined they’d rather utilize a little more of that in order to preserve draft capital.

I am inclined toward the idea that Bill had a good sense he’d be in demand on the open market and did him a solid by turning him loose, however.

All of the guys that are associated with local media and cover the patriots have beaten this to a bloody pulp. In the end, all seem to agree that Belichick did a solid good thing for a man he admired and who gave everything to the Patriots that was asked of him. Even Julian Edelman said the Hoyer was the MVP of the 2018team, playoffs and Super Bowl for the incredible grunt work he put in during practices. Every defensive player said that he made the playoffs much much easier for them to do their job.

Bill knew that he was locked into a two year contract for just under $5M and did Hoyer a favor and allowed him to get twice as much guaranteed.

Hoyer will be the Patriots' QB Coach in 2025.

I tend to agree with you. Trading Hoyer might have netted a late round draft pick at best and that might have resulted in Brian going to a team he had no interest in going to. I think BB did him a solid and released him knowing that he would find a job quickly and have some control over his destination.

Really? I think anything anyone wants to discuss is worth discussing. If not, nobody will reply.
