Why are so many managers terrible at bullpen management in the playoffs

Brian Snitker, Dave Roberts and AJ Hinch all cost their teams a series because they were retarded with their bullpens.

Don’t take out a starter who is dealing, and if you’re using a starter in the pen, don’t pull him after one inning if he’s dealing. Seems so simple.

I agree for the most part, but given what's at stake I do understand why managers have a much quicker hook in the postseason. Look at Kershaw's 7th inning in Game 1 of the 2014 NLDS. He was dealing the first 6 innings (though he did give up a solo shot to Matt Carpenter in the 6th). However, things completely fell apart in the 7th and it wasn't until after he gave up 6 hits that he got pulled.

I do think they should have stuck to Greinke a little longer. he hung a changeup to one of the best hitters in the game, mistakes happen. The Soto walk include a pretty bullshit ball 3.

they probably shouldn't have saved Cole like they did though. it's game 7!

There is no winning for Hinch.

Had he left in Greinke and he gave up the 2 run HR, I'm sure he would have got killed for it the same way.

If the reliever he brought in actually did his job then we would hear how it was a great move by him.

But as @navamind there was no need to save Cole. He should have been the first reliever in following Greinke

I can't totally fault Will Harris for the home run though. That was a well placed pitch, Kendrick just made good contact.

Overrated Freddie deserves more of the blame in the Braves bed shitting vs. the Cardinals than Shitker does.

Would have been a sweep if Snit just stuck with Fried in game one. But we got Luke Jackson.

Roles be damned and while still allowing for some matchup related leeway I don't understand why more managers don't just use their available relievers/pitchers in "best to worst" order in game 7. Nothing worse than losing a battle before you've fired your best weapons.

I think AJ knew Cole had already checked out, even before the game:

Gerrit Cole wears Boras Corp hat, distances himself from Astros moments after World Series loss

Gerrit Cole, a pending free agent, wasted no time distancing himself from the Houston Astros Wednesday night as the star pitcher donned a baseball cap bearing his agent's logo and telling reporters he was "not an employee of the team."

Seems like a dick move. But I'll reserve judgement until I see what Boras's logo looks like

you'd think managers would have learned this lesson after the Showalter debacle.

Wow. What a great team mate he is going to make on his new team.

I’m still waiting on him and Charlie Morton to get busted for PEDs. Their progression with Houston seemed fishy, Cole came from the NL to the league with more offense and started dominating. Morton was in his 30’s and found like 4 more mph on his fastball

I know right, at least have a cool color scheme or something, looks like he got it from Cafe Press.
Exactly! That being said, I still may pick one up to wear to my bowling league so people think I'm good.

Did Morton make specific changes though? It's far from impossible these days given all that we know and all of the data that we have, look at all of the success/velo increases that the Driveline guys have had.

Morton was throwing a lot harder in his brief stint in Philly before his season ended early. Doesn't seem to me like the Astros had anything to do with that. he's also been throwing his curveball a lot more the last few years, which has been one of the better curveballs in baseball per Fangraphs' pitch values.

Cole was a very highly touted prospect and he did have a great 2015 season, though he never had such high strikeout rates in Pittsburgh. His velocity has trended up the last few years, but it's only a few ticks higher than when he first came up. he's also scrapped his sinker since joining the Astros.
