With Cravens moving to SS this year, I think we need a true centerfielder safety. Now I see Peppers being mocked to us at #17 but isn't he the same player as Cravens? I don't think he fits as being a true FS. The best FS in this draft is Hooker from Ohio st. Most likely he wont be there at #17. I think the LSU kid can do both positions but it looks like he is going to be a top 10 pick.

So who are the true FS's left? Is it Budda Baker from Wash? Is he worth the #17 pick overall? I know Williams from Utah is a true FS but he is not first round material. Most likely 2nd round. Someone please tell me who are the true FS's in this draft b/c I believe that is the biggest hole in our secondary.

Budda is like a young earl thomas. 17 may be a stretch for him but he'll be a really good pro. Budda > Peppers

I heard good things about him but scouts say he has terrible hands. You think he has the same talent as Earl Thomas coming out of Texas? Give me some more info about him please. Thanks.

I wouldn't say he has terrible hands, but he is a DB. What reminds me of earl the most is his tackling. He's as sure as it gets for a college safety. He seems to always be around the ball.

Maybe not as good in a single high safety defense because he doesn't have the same speed, but honestly who does.

I think the Skins will be looking for a true centerfield safety. I don't know if Peppers or this guy are those players. I'd be shocked if Baker went top 20.

I think this year it really could be up to the experts and the combine to give us those answers.
Also, with the defense we run, height does not seem to matter for the centerfielder. Acceleration, tackling and proper angles on the ground and in the air will be key. So if we miss out on Hooker and Adams, there should still be guys who are labeled SS that could fit in at FS for us. And honestly if we miss out on Hooker or Adams, expect a Landon Collins type effect. The rookie will probably look like a flop, but rebound well the following season.

Get this...I saw a mock on ESPN where they have us drafting a WR at 17. I get it that either DJax and/or PG might not be here, but a WR at 17 seems a bit too tall of an order to ask the faithful to swallow considering the need to replace and/or upgrade nearly everywhere on defense.

Agreed, in fact I'll even offer that SM and Co. aren't exactly sure right now, what the needs will be come draft time. I expect that we will be pretty active in free agency hopefully, filling needs that don't have to be addressed in the draft.

If they do that. He better turn out to be Jerry Rice or Randy Moss. So when they start talkin that BPA bullshit, that's exactly what he turns out to be.

Far as dean's question in the OP. I think we need at the very least 2 FAs to add to the defense. One I think should be our NG/DT with my treasoning being 1) to guarantee that he doesn't hit a rookie wall. 2) so there will be no questions whether or not he can or can't handle the position. We'll already know that he can.

I was thinking the 2nd FA needed to preferably be a LB, but if we are gonna stick with Cravens as a SS. I now think the 2nd FA should be a FS. Cravens is gonna need a lotta help and a mentor of sorts. Even during games, hell, maybe esperically during games.

Actually I want to see how everything in Free Agency pans out. There might not be reasons to draft for some spots after the spending spree subsides.

if you sign some defensive talent (or offensive ) in FA then the needs change

my drafting system is simple , compile a list of needs and prioritize them

when your spot comes see if a player is rated on your board at one of your needs has value for the pick if it does make it but go through your needs first

if it isnt a player that gives you value and fills a need then you have 2 options 1) trade down 2) if trade isnt available draft the BPA on your board

so its a combo method not an either or

talented teams may just go strictly with the board

rebuilding teams like ours could go heavy in the needs area

A lot of good options here but for me I think I’d grab S Obi Melifonwu if he’s available. He’s a big safety with a ton of range, and the ability to match-up man to man vs big physical TEs and WRs. That is a weapon to have on your defense and something the Redskins have lacked since the days of Sean Taylor.

this is from steve shoup , draft nic for the redskins at fanspeak who attended the sr bowl
