I saw an article in the Athletic about one hit wonders. I thought it would be fun to solicit from the forum guys who had the spotlight shine brightly on them once or a short period, but back to obscurity after that.

LOL - that article cited Ron Kittle as a White Sox one hit wonder (I can't say I'd agree, but if Kittle is Richie Zisk ought to qualify).

"The Bird - Fidritch - is a great example in my mind.

Gordon Beckhman - it is hard for me to say he is a one hit wonder, but he started off good enough and got progressively worse as a hitter every day thereafter.

Eddie Gaudel - the shortest player ever - fits the definition - spot light and then nothing. Thank you Mr. Vick.

Jim Spencer and his 8 RBI game against the Indians in 1977 -is a one hit wonder kind of accomplishment.

Can we nominate my least f*cking favorite player of all time?

F*cking asshole pitches like a Cy Young for the Cubs...then literally destroys any chance we have for 3 f*cking seasons. I don't know how he made it past season 1, much less 3...That dude was the baseball living breathing metaphor for sunk cost fallacy.

I mean...Jaime Navarro is the f*cking Marino to my Ray Finkle.

I don't think I'll ever hate a player more in my lifetime.

You know how when you hear about how Jerry Reinsdorf will never pay a big time pitcher in free agency because he doesn't like to do so? I'm 99% sure it's because he's still f*cking butthurt like the rest of us about that f*cking guy.

Walt Bond slugged .800 in a cup of coffee with the Colt 45s, then struggled with leukemia for several years before dying at 29.

Interesting. It must have taken him quick because he actually played the beginning of his age 29 season (and played well for that matter). He played in April and died before the season was over in September. He played a bit more than a cup of coffee, though. He played in six different seasons. Two were essentially full seasons. The one you're referring to was his 3rd short stint. Hit 20 HR's and drove in 85 runs with Houston in 1964.

Walt Bond Stats | Baseball-Reference.com

I don't think it's a one hit wonder. Plus, I don't think someone literally dying is along the lines of what we're referring to.

Gavin Floyd had a pretty respectable 13 year career.

Gavin Floyd Stats | Baseball-Reference.com

Quentin had more than one good year for us. Made two ASG's.

Carlos Quentin Stats | Baseball-Reference.com

Avi was a one hit wonder for us. Jury is still out on him, overall.

Rest are good calls.

floyd's one hit wonder year was 2008. sucked the rest of his career. i don't think there's much debate about it.

quentin .... same year.

avi .... same year. hasn't come close to those figures since.

Floyd's WAR with the White Sox (07 and 13 are pretty much washes - he barely pitched):

08 - 3.5
09 - 4.1 (best)
10 - 3.3
11 - 2.8
12 - 2.2

The furthest his ERA strayed from 08 was 0.53 points. 3.84, 4.06, 4.08, 4.37 and 4.29.

He had his best WHIP in 2011. 1.260, 1.228, 1.372, 1.162 and 1.363.

His FIP was better in every year following than it was in 08. 4.77, 3.77, 3.46, 3.81 and 4.46. I would assume this is because he K'd over a batter more per 9 in each season.

He pitched 206, 193, 187, 193 and 168 innings in each season.

Floyd's ERA over this timeframe was 4.12 (The AL average was 4.19)
Floyd's WHIP over this timeframe was 1.277 (The AL average was 1.354)

For reference: American League Pitching Year-by-Year Averages | Baseball-Reference.com

It seems like he was basically the same "average to a bit above average" pitcher throughout his time here. With only slight fluctuations.

And per Quentin? I guess we have a different definition of a one hit wonder. He didn't make it back to the heights he reached in his career season which included MVP candidacy. However, he did continue being a productive power hitter when healthy and made another ASG for us.

Yeah, Avi's historic "BABIP year" will always live in infamy. He's not as good as his batting average that season. I won't dispute that. However, he did have a respectable year in TB. A disappointment with us, no doubt.

Bobby Jenks got the 50 saves, but pretty much had no career after that.
