I rate Grier lower. Since I have been actively watching and keeping up with the Mounties, late 1970s I look at several things in ranking them. If you look at what did they accomplish, what was their strength, ability, where did they take the team, I would rate the ones you listed a bit differently:
1) Major Harris, he was a man among boys, ahead of his time, no one had an answer for him when healthy
2) Pat White, won two NY bowls, only QB to lead a team to four bowl wins
3) Jeff Hostetler, the win at Oklahoma was what put WVU on the map, first win over sPitt in a long time.
4) Geno Smith, the huge numbers and the Orange Bowl win put him here
5) Jake Kelchner, He lands here for leading the team to the BE championship and unblemished season
6) Will Grier, huge potential, didn't get the job done even with all the hype, and talent galore around him
7) Marc Bulger, he was the QB at a low time for us

you left off Chad Johnston, a multi year starter after Kelchner, Marshall, Lewis, Howard and a couple others who started at least some games.

My list...

1. Major Harris. IMO... no one generated excitement like he did. First perfect season.
2. Pat White. 2 major bowl wins. Leadership skills. Inverted veer made famous.
3. Oliver Luck. Big recruit at the time. Started the resurrection of WVU football.
4. Jeff Hostetler. Put WVU on the national stage. Huge win over Pitt.
5. Bernie Galiffa. Produced pure magic for a 10 yr old!
6. Danny Kendra. Talk about a pure passer!
7. Marc Bulger. Talk about a pure passer!
8. Will Grier. Gunslinger mentality. Made some memorable throws.
9. Geno Smith. Another kid who made some memorable throws.
10. Skyler Howard. Loved his attitude... grit.... passion.

i wanted to post this cause in all honesty I agree with Dad on Will Grier. Have you ever seen a SR QB do some of the dumb SH$T he did this year. For all of those that hate Skyler.

Skyler’s last 2 seasons
18-8

6,473 passing yards. 52 TD – 24 INT

965 rushing yards (300 attempts). 16 TD – 8 fumbles

18 wins
7,438 total yards
68 TD
32 turnovers

Will’s last 2 seasons
15-7

7,354 passing yards. 71 TD – 20 INT

32 rushing yards (111 attempts). 5 TD – 5 fumbles

15 wins
7,386 total yards
75 TD
25 turnovers

Skyler was not good under pressure. But Grier was a first half QB.

2017: completed 64% of passes. Just 53% in the 4th. Less than 50% on 3rd down with more INT than TD.

2018: Of his 37 TD he had 5 in the 4th. Sure, their were some blowouts that would have affected that stat. But we had zero points in the 2nd half at Iowa St. 10 of 41 against Ok St. 0 of 42 against TT.

As far as pro ready QB, imho

1. Grier
2. Luck
3. Bulger
4. Hoss

As far as a college QB and the best for that level

1. Major
2. PW
3. Hoss
4. Grier

Major came along too early and that's a shame, would LOVE to have seen him in some of todays offenses. That shoulder injury will haunt me forever. I was so looking forward to watching him go H2H (healthy) vs Tony Rice from Notre Dame, I enjoyed TR's game as well.

Skyler....was just not good...I don't care what the numbers say..I will give him the greatest over achiever award if we want to put that list together..

How can you say he was not that good, and on the other hand say Grier was the best. All we have not go by is numbers and frankly the numbers for production are not that different.

Interesting debate. If Skyler was the greatest overachiever, Grier was the greatest underachiever. Grier had a better offensive line, better receivers, better backs and achieved about the same result.

Did you watch any games the past two years? Look at the Kansas, IAST, OSU and OU games this year. He had a great upside, but his hot dog gunslinger mentality bit our team hard this year. Yes, he got it done a lot, like the Texas game, but the two sacks for TDs for OU cost us that game, a CCG, a Big bowl berth, and a coach.....had he secured the ball on those two plays, WVU would have been playing Texas for the league title, gone to the Sugar Bowl, had 9 or 10 wins, and Lyons would have extended your buddy and given him a raise......

Wins and losses, brother. If you thought he was great against Kansas, iast, OSU and ou, you better look again. All the picks against kansas, holding the ball like a deer in the headlights against iast, the errant passes against OSU, the two sack/fumbles against ou......yes he is a great pro prospect, but did no more for wvu than Howard did........

How did Will underachieve exactly?

Watch Iowa State and OSU over again.
Will was great had great stats and many touchdowns.
4th place in the conference is underachievement for this years team.

Will took a #17 ranked team into the season ended at #15
Skyler took the unranked 2016 team, won 10 games and ended up at #14.

Will was more like Bulger. Great arm, great QB no great seasons. Compare to Major Harris who never had the tools to go pro but gave us an undefeated season.

We will see what happens in the draft. I see Will as a career backup. He may have just missed his last chance to start a football game.
Unless he goes to Japan where he can compete against Howard.

So let me drill this further...Will, Major and Skyler where the only players on their teams? No one else was responsible for any of the wins and losses? Its been a long time since I played but the last time I checked it was a team game...if one player falls down another should pick up the slack...its a constant...that has never changed...ITS A TEAM GAME!
