Right below Nehlen in my opinion, he done nothing but good for us. He may not be a great coach but I think he is a good one.

Never beat the Sooners or Orange. Middle of the pack. Nehlen, Bowden and RR were all better. You can even make an argument that Stewart was better.

He wasn't terrible, but he couldn't get it done with a loaded team.

If we are talking of what they did at WVU, and not their overall career:
1) Fraud, two major bowl wins as underdogs, three back to back 10 win seasons, top 5 rankings, respect from everyone in the nation, a buzz and swagger around the whole program.
2) Nehlen, few outside our area gave WVU a thought, buds here in Columbus did not realize WVU played major college football until we beat Oklahoma out there in 1982.
3) Holgorsen, had more talent on the field than anyone, yet underperformed and faded every year, lack of discipline seemed to cause breakdowns on both sides of the ball at times.
4) Stewart, took over a team reeling from Fraud bolting and held it together, brought in some great talent, competed in nearly every game, not the best x and o coach, but discipline , heart, inspiration were great
5) Bowden, awesome man, again took over after a successful coach bolted and improved WVU football. Got a raw deal from WVU fans, he learned here what he used later at FSU
6) Cignetti, he could bring in some great players, had some great assistants, he had little success on the field, but left a core of players that Nehlen built on.

IF we are talking overall career, we can only really comment on four as the other two are still active:

1) Bowden, needs no additions
2) Nehlen
3) Cignetti, went on to a great career in lower level ball
4) Stewart, pretty small sample size,

My ranking...

1. Nehlen - built WVU into a National program.
2. Rich - gave WVU the 3 best seasons in a row in Mountaineer history.
3. Dana - 2nd most wins in Mountaineer history. Part of the transition into the Big 12. Had WVU ranked in the top 15 for the regular season for 2 out of the last 3 years.
4. Bowden - success with nothing. Piss poor facilities... recruiting challenges.
5. Stewart - nice guy who loved and was loved by his players and community. Hired some bad offensive coaches, and ruined something that could have remained something.
6. Cignetti - I personally knew him very well as I was friends with his son Curt and my sister was besties with his daughter Lisa. His career showed he was a great coach. Just had a bad run under trying times in Morgantown.

Make an argument for Stewart?..no you really can't...

How do you throw Bowden in? He was run off by the fan base in Wv?...

Spot on, however I don’t agree Stewart ruined the program. It is tough to continue 11 win seasons, but 9 wins per year with top 25 rankings was not terrible. Mullen’s offense was terrible and I don’t think 26 straight run plays would have cut it in the B12

In no way was I trying to say Stewart ruined the program.

He ruined our offense... which in turn ruined what Rich had built... and that was special.

Rich's last two years...
'06 - #5 in Total Offense 461 ypg; #3 in Scoring 39 ppg
'07 - #15 in Total Offense 456 ypg; #9 in Scoring 40 ppg

Stewart's last two years...
'09 - #61 in Total Offense 377 ypg; #67 in Scoring 26 ppg
'10 - #67 in Total Offense 373 ypg; #78 in Scoring 25 ppg

That ain't cutting it in the Big 12. Only in a conference like the BE could you win with that kind of crap production in points and production.

You got me curious, so got looking:
Total defense:
2006 #49
2007 #8
2008 #11
2009 #32
2010 # 4
2011 #63
2012 #117
Makes you wonder if great offense and great defense can exist together at WVU??????2007 is the high water mark for both sides of the ball together.

I think you have your answer. It existed in '07. Had Stewart not fucked our offense by hiring Mullen and Co... we would have had it in '10 too.

It will be hard to have a top 10 defense in the Big 12.

2015 OU finished #39 in Total Defense... was tops in Big 12. Finished #7 in Total Offense. CFP team... 11-2.

2014 TCU finished #18 in Total Defense... tops in Big 12. Finished #5 in Total Offense. Finished 12-1.

In our new league, I think we need to reassess great defense.

With nearly every team we face playing some version of a spread offense, the days of defenses completely shutting down its opponent are likely over. The days of playing hard hitting... knock your socks off football.... are likely over.

Bama has an NFL ready group of kids manning its defense. They could slow down OU... they could not stop it.

In fact, Big 12 teams averaged more points and more yards against SEC opponents this bowl season than the averages for the season of those SEC teams.

Big 12 vs. SEC this bowl season
Baylor (Vandy): 45 points/668 yards
OU (Bama): 34/471
OSU (Mizzou): 38/502
Texas (UGA): 28/354
Average: 36.2 points/499 yards
Record: 3-1
— Jake Trotter (@Jake_Trotter) January 2, 2019

Sad, but you are right. I loved our defense years ago, we had some great defensive players in the 1980s with some great defensive plays. With all the rule changes and how the offensive side has become more inventive, we may have to realize that great defense today means you made them kick a field goal instead of scoring their fifth TDs!!!

Yep. All one has to do is look to the NFL this year. Scoring is up. Total Offense is up.

It was much easier to defend pro style offenses. Even Saban has abandoned his pro style set.

Scoring is up everywhere, defense is down. More passing and yards and touchdowns may just be the result of rules and officiating. Pass interference and targeting have changed how the game is played. What used to be a good hit is now an ejection.
