Redskins' starting skill players solid but depth is questionable

i think we have solid starters but depth is either unproven or simply not there

a healthy reed , some production from roberts , crowder and grant and AM jones combo and we have the makings of a good offense if we can not dig ourselves a huge hole early like last year

Let's not forget Kirk, if looking better than the other guy were victories, this team would forever be in contention!

Redskins O-line could be good--eventually

looking forward to seeing this unit grow as the year goes on . we will find out about stieger and lavou

The NFL's best 10 D-lines: Who's deep enough to top Watt and Suh's units?

Fans are going to need to be patient with this unit. It usually takes a while for players to develop and lines to gel. As per this link the Redskins will be facing 4 of the top 5 defensive lines this season & the top two during the first two weeks.

If the Redskins can be respectable & avoid major injuries during these games that will be a plus. However - even if they play poorly at the beginning of the year it is no reason to give up on this unit.

Washington Redskins' roster gets younger; fewer players over 30 - Washington Redskins Blog - ESPN

BTW - didn't realize this until now. The Redskins now only have 5 players over the age of 30 & really only rely on 2-3 of these players. Not bad. I seem to recall a time when on this forum (& the similar one on ESPN) that several posters would always complain about the age of Redskins players. Just another area that hopefully SM changes as part of an overall culture change.

you are right and that is a good thing

Another great article from Jerry Brewer

Excerpt

This season, the first with McCloughan in charge of football operations, is the beginning of a difficult process. What constitutes progress in 2015? It’s possible for the team to suffer double-digit losses for the sixth time in seven years and still be on the right path.

That’s not intended as permission to stink without remorse. There are limits. But even if the Redskins aren’t ready to be judged against the NFL’s best, you can still expect for sanity to reemerge this season.

What constitutes progress? Evaluate the season in three areas.

1. The physical factor: Whether an offseason of emphasis results in improved offensive and defensive line play and an overall upgrade in toughness.

2. The competitiveness factor: Whether a 4-12 team that lost nine games by double digits a year ago changes into one that consistently gives itself opportunities to win.

3. The coaching factor: Whether second-year Coach Jay Gruden spurs the development of his quarterbacks and makes the most of the new talent McCloughan has given him.

If those three things are accomplished, it will be clear where this team is headed. If not, prepare for a long year followed by another round of major offseason readjustments.

Good stuff as always Dad, thanks for posting. Safety remains our weakness, damnit I knew the Sean Taylor tragedy would haunt us for over a decade. I had high hopes for the defensive improvements and I think they will be better but they still have a lot of problems. I think the OL is at least a year away from being good, still need a few pieces. But Scherff and Moses simply have to be better than the guys they replaced.

These are great pts - especially # 2. I had forgotten the specifics of the games last season (probably on purpose). Many of them were blowouts where the Redskins made insane mistakes and quite possibly just quit. They likely will have a relatively poor record this season. However - if this also includes many close games, a fighting spirit and true improvement by young players then I can accept that (probably not at the time but in hindsight).

True rebuilding is not easy for fans, but the long term benefits eventually make it worth it. This is the reason why SM was hired, and hopefully we will see a hint of progress this season followed by real progress during the next few seasons.
