I had to go with Caddyshack but Airplane! as well as Empire would be right there as far as that list.

Blues Brothers is close too, the ensemble casts of the other two comedies I mentioned put them slightly above Jake and Elwood, imo.

3 of the GREATEST comedies of all time. And that is leaving Stir Crazy off the table.

Empire was culturally influential, but next to Caddyshack, Blues Brothers and Airplane!, it just can’t compete.

Then you have Blue Lagoon, Mad Max and Shining added to the mix?

Hollywood just sucks today.

Probably Blues Brothers 1, Empire Strikes Back 2, Airplane! 3 for me.

Best movie from this year would be tough but Blues Brothers is the one my wife and I quote the most by quite a large margin

My Dad and I quote it a lot because it’s his favorite comedy.

With the rest of my family and friends, we quote Airplane! and Caddyshack significantly more often by my estimation.

Also, wanted to remark on you having a wife that quotes Blues Brothers. Big fuckin’ W sir. :heh:

Yeah, its definitely a big win. I'd actually never seen Blues Brothers before I met her (neither of us were born in 80) but she bonded with her Dad over music from the 70s so that naturally became one of her favorites. We also make road trips up to Chicago about once a year.

Good call. I missed that one. It was released in Australlia in '79, but the United States in '80. "Other" option for you, as I cannot make edits.

Empire Strikes Back. It's the all time best Star Wars movie.

Raging Bull
That was an even bigger omission. I just asked AI for the top grossing films of 1980. Raging Bull and Mad Max are not on that list. No more trusting AI. It leads to bad things.

I have found the AI typically loves its magic mushrooms. It hallucinates A LOT if you are not VERY clear in the wording of your questions. Commercially available AI chat bots just aren’t very useful, YET. Give it MAYBE another year, and life as we know it today will be over.

One of the most boring movies ever made.

:behindsofa:

You REALLY have to go in with a certain mindset on that movie. It is a huge character study and more a period piece movie. It does have some realistic boxing scenes, but IMO it's less about a boxing movie. It's FAR more a character study/drama heavily driven by the period in which it's framed... boxing just happens to be the central 'theme' that drives the movie.

I think a lot of people find it overrated because they go in expecting a boxing movie something to the likes of Rocky and it's far from that. Rocky explores a lot of drama too, but Scorcese does it much more dramatically and Raging Bull is tonally vastly different and a darker/less feel good theme. It takes some focus and a certain mindset to enjoy movies like that.

And not saying you think it's overrated because you didn't go in with the right mindset, but I do think it turns some people off. That said, I lump it in as a bit overrated as well, but I understand the heavy appeal to it at the same time.

There are movies that I think are WAY overrated and I DON'T understand the heavy appeal - like the Big Lebowski. I think with that movie in particular, it just became taboo and 'socially acceptable' to think it was cool... . I wouldn't even use the word Cult Classic... People can't even give a good answer when you ask why it's good. "CAUSE DUDE AND WHITE RUSSIANS!" Okay Internet pleb... go find your Internet meme of the week and stop talking to me.

And Coal Miners Daughter was nominated for 7 Academy Awards ..and Sissy Spacek won Best Actress.
