This is a tight one - only 5 teams who missed in 2017 made the dance in 2018.

Dallas
Florida
St Louis

Was going to pick those 3 as well.

But since the Pacific is looking like its on a downslide, will go with

St Louis
Calgary
Edmonton

You can make a decent argument for any 3 of the Canadian Pacific teams but I don't think more than 1 will actually make it and I'm more confident about the three I chose than I would be about any of those three.

I like the changes that Flames have made this off-season, the fancy stat guys hate the Dougie Hamilton trade and I'm sure the Flames will miss his offense, but I'm also pretty confident they won't miss his dumb penalties and at times questionable play in his own end. I certainly won't miss Glen Gulutzan behind the bench, but is Bill Peters the answer? Thankfully, the Pacific Division is in a downward trend and it might be enough for Calgary to make the playoffs. I think St. Louis and Dallas are two teams I also see making the playoffs in the West that missed a year ago.

I'd be most worried about 36 year old Mike Smith starting in goal.

Giordano going on 35 years old is concerning too (and indicative of just how badly the Flames squandered the prime years of yet another star player). How close is he to going off the cliff? Is Hamonic gonna come good in his second year? Can Hanifin take advantage of the weaker division and conference and rack up some points?

I like their top 6 but if a centreman becomes available (Duchene?) they need to go all in for him. I like Backlund a lot more as a third liner than I do on the second.

And the problem for the Flames is you can pretty much write the same write-up for the Canucks and the Oilers. Any of these teams is a hot goalie and their defence coming together from getting into the playoffs, and either of them are an injured forward away from another top 10 pick.

For all your guys picking the Oilers to make the playoffs this season, there are rumo(u)rs out there that Sekera tore his Achilles tendon training in Europe...

Edit: Now official from the Oilers twitter account:

They NEED Jake now.

do it Kyle !
Other than McDavid and Drai (neither of whom they'd move) is there actually anybody on that roster you want on your team more than Jake Gardiner?

And then what do we do about our further-weakened defence?
