Love this small article as he does a good job articulating the evolution of the original WCO.

who says the wco has to be exactly what walsh ran? the niners offense progressed from walsh to holmgren to shanahan. do we need versions for this stuff? like wco 4.3 to decribe one offense and say wco 5.4 to descibe another?

we all know it ain't what Walsh ran, that disappeared by the late 80's. we know this because Walsh himself said so.

for me, Fangio is saying there really isn't a WCO today, there's no WCO SYSTEM that a team uses 'day to day'. there isn't a WCO PLAYBOOK that a team uses each season.

yes, there are still remnants of it, but not a system. even now, what Harbaugh's running isn't even close to a WCO, but he still used the term. why did he use it?

cause 49er fans love it, we buy into it.

Wasn't one of the well known descriptors of Walsh's WCO 'Using the pass to set up the run'? Specifically the short passes? That is a pretty good description of what the 49ers are doing on offense right now... dink and dunk passing by Alex Smith to set up Frank Gore.

I think it was more using short passes as runs.

just because it isn't a playbook from the 1980's doesn't mean it isn't a wco.
