Nebraska brought its can't-do-anything offense to the bowl game. That might be unfortunate timing for offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, who is awaiting word on the Miami (Ohio) job. The first several minutes of this game weren't shown live on ESPN because of the Tennessee-North Carolina game.

If Watson's lucky, the entire Holiday Bowl was pre-empted in Oxford, Ohio.

It was not a stellar play-calling night for Watson. Last year, on this field, Watson rolled into 2010 with an array of new stuff, including a zone read and wildcat that mauled the Wildcats of Arizona.

This year? No such new stuff. No such imagination.

Give his players, specifically the offensive line, some blame. The wide-body holes that were prevalent in Seattle were missing. Washington promised to play better gap control on the zone read, but the Huskers still outweighed the Huskies up front by an average of 50 pounds per man.

It was obvious early something was missing. Rex Burkhead took a snap out of the wildcat, rolled right and looked to pass. But before he could find an open Ben Cotton, two Husky defenders were in his face. Burkhead was hit by Victor Aiyewa and fumbled. It set up U-Dub's first touchdown.

Is Barney Cotton up for any jobs?

Chatelain: A year ago Nebraska was back, but now? - Omaha.com

Bo must become a better CEO. He must fix the little things that separate a top-20 program from a top-5 powerhouse.

He has to make tough calls. He has to learn from mistakes. He has to hurt feelings.

He has to get rid of Shawn Watson.

That's where it starts. No more Kool-Aid drinking. No more excuses.

This relationship isn't working, and we didn't need another offensive disaster (189 total yards!) to realize it.

Watson's offense cost Nebraska two Big 12 championships. It remains a mess. No consistency. No innovation. No execution. No clue what it wants to be, or how to get there.

Many times, we've documented the problems. At this point, they're too many to count. Doesn't matter who's at fault. Nebraska needs a new start.

After the game, Pelini said he expects to have everyone on staff to return in 2011. But Watson said he didn't know if he'd be back.

"We'll see what happens," Watson said.

If Watson doesn't get the head coaching job at Miami (Ohio), Pelini should ask him -- and anyone else on the offensive staff who isn't maximizing talent -- to leave.

Formatting didn't hold but basically 78 of 293 yards, 5 of 11 first downs OK
77 of 188 yards, 3 0f 11 first downs Wash

We play worse in the second half then first.
