Blob Mac tweeting Peter Schaefer is on $125 waivers

While his team has yet to prove to be any better than before he arrived -- it should be this year, but we'll see in the playoffs -- one of GM Mike Gillis' successful initiatives has been making Vancouver a place players want to play. And it's not just the lavish dressing room, gourmet meals after every practice and the lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous travel and accommodations. It's how the players are treated: and a good example right now is Peter Schaefer.
The feel-good story of training camp is ending sadly, with the former Canuck and transplanted Vancouverite clearing waivers Wednesday on his way out of the organization. But Schaefer has a two-way deal and the Canucks are within their rights -- and probably under NHL encouragement -- to force Schaefer to report to the minors or sit out the rest of the season unpaid. Instead, out of respect, they'll grant Schaefer his unconditional release so he can pursue another job as a free agent.
The NHL may not be happy it, as a contract is a contract. But players notice these acts of decency.
