The canonicity is ambiguous and, for now, up to fan interpretation. Producers have given multiple contradictory or ambivalent statements, because Disney/Marvel and Sony want different things.

As far as Disney/Marvel is concerned, it's a entirely separate continuity. But Sony wants fans to consider it as in the same continuity as Homecoming, but since Homecoming is clearly part of the MCU, that would imply Venom is part of the MCU.

So it's basically up to each fan's interpretation.
That’s kinda what I thought. And I am ok with that, to an extent. The MCU is already getting kinda foggy with the Netflix shows and how they tie in with the Snap. Then you got C&D, SHIELD and the Runaways which all have verging levels of inconsistency in the overall story.

And I have always been a fan of putting Deadpool in all universes (kinda like the watcher). He breaks the 4th wall already anyway, so fuck consistency with those movies.

saw Venom last night. It was entertaining. The CGI was a little too much...like Transformer level shit, but it was good.

Without spoilers, is the movie worth seeing? I'm gonna see it regardless, I just wanna know if it's worth the money I'm inevitably gonna spend lol.

I enjoyed it, really. I don't know if seeing it on the big screen makes a difference, but there are some scenes that just made me a little dizzy. There are some fun little Marvel Easter eggs throughout, but it doesn't tie into the MCU really. They kind of prep for it though.

I think I would have liked it more with an R rating.

what I found weird is that it takes place in San Francisco, not NYC

the director mentioned that the movie is partly based on the "Venom: Lethal Protector" comic, which was set in San Fran.

I saw it yesterday with a friend. We both liked it. Hardy was good and the back and forth conversations between he and the symbiote were probably the best part of the movie. The villain was a little weak. Overall, I liked it.

Venom opened this weekend in China and is an enormous hit, with an astonishing $111 million opening:

- 2nd-highest superhero opening ever in China, behind only Avengers 3: Infinity War's $199.3 million

- actually outperformed the US opening of $80.3 million

Venom is just an insane sleeper hit:

- Before this weekend, Venom has already made $673.5 million worldwide.

- It is now projected to go over $800 million.

- It is likely that it will exceed both Amazing Spider-Man 1 and Amazing Spider-Man 2. "Amazing!"

- Obviously, it's not going to come anywhere close to Avengers 3: Infinity War's $2 billion or Black Panther's $1.3 billion, but it has already beaten the third MCU entry of the year, Ant-Man 2: Ant-Man and the Wasp's $622.5 million.

- It would likely beat Deadpool 2 as well were it not for the PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2, and depending on how that re-release performs, Venom might exceed even both Deadpool 2 releases combined.

Just watched it on blue-ray. Good, fun flick.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Venom’s sudden switch to “good guy” though. I realize that Klyntar are influenced by their hosts, but Venom is supposed to be corrupted already and Eddie was never established as particularly “noble” or “heroic”. How would he be able to influence Venom to that degree?

I think he had a noble or heroic side to him. He definitely showed sympathy in the market when the dude was shaking down the old lady. He definitely showed that he was looking for justice when he interviewed.

And Venom being the underdog that he is seems to be ok clinging to that sort of thing. On Earth he can be something of a hero.

The whole “On my home planet, I am a loser just like you” comment lends to your argument. For now I can buy that.

Good movie, though. Let’s see how the character developers in future films.

A correction and an update:

First, the correction: the news article I was consulting for the China opening statistic was mistaken. Venom is actually the 3rd-highest, not 2nd-highest, superhero opening in China, behind not only Avengers 3: Infinity War but also Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Nevertheless, still an extremely impressive box office performance.

And the update on that subject of the extremely impressive box office performance: Venom indeed did it, beating the potential benchmarks in the quoted post: at its current worldwide box office of $854 million, it has:

- gone over $800 million

- beaten Amazing Spider-Man 1

- beaten Amazing Spider-Man 2

- beaten Deadpool 2 including the PG-13 Once Upon a Deadpool re-release

I had fun watching it. Sure it was batshit insane and much more comedic than I anticipated, but it was a lot of dumb fun. I'm ok with this one having been PG-13, but considering
they introduced Carnage at the end of the post-credits
, the sequel better be a hard R

Technically, they introduced Cletus Kasady, not Carnage.

I mean it's not a good movie, but it was bad enough that it was enjoyable and good for a laugh. Hardy was... Hardy. Woody at the end just added to the fuckery. I will probably see the second one whenever that day comes.
