West Virginia ?finalizing? neutral-site game against Tennessee in 2018 | Saturday Down South
Tennessee will play anybody. If you don’t believe it, just look at the Vols’ 2014 non-conference schedule.
The Charleston Gazette reported today that West Virginia is finalizing a 2018 neutral-site game against Tennessee in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Because of the upcoming playoff, WVU athletic director Oliver Luck is trying to beef up their non-conference schedule, in what he calls an ‘NFL-like schedule’. Tennessee is a big part of that.
“We’re close to finalizing a deal to play Tennessee in Charlotte in 2018,” said Alex Hammond, WVU’s director of football operations. “That would give us a marquee game in a marquee venue. It would be exciting for the fans and the team.”
Tennessee head coach Butch Jones is a former WVU assistant coach, as he worked from 2005-06 as the Mountaineers wide receivers coach. WVU and Tennessee have never played before.
West Virginia opens 2014 against Alabama in Atlanta.
