Jeff Passan:
Free agent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is in agreement on a deal with the New York Yankees pending a physical, league sources tell ESPN. Tulowitzki is expected to join the Yankees on a league-minimum deal, with the Toronto Blue Jays paying the remainder of his $20 million salary.

Yankee fans will freak the fuck out now; assuming this means a Machado deal is dead. I doubt it really has anything to do with Machado. Yankees need the IF depth.

< Not freaking out at all. I think they've made their "take it or leave it" offer to Machado, and this indicates they expect him to leave it.

If Tulo can stay healthy (which with Tulo is a massive "if"), it's a steal, and they're not over a barrel for a SS while they wait for Didi to mend.

An example of one of the franchises that can make this sort of gamble and not have to pay for it in talent a year from now.

It's really not even a gamble. They're on the hook for the minimum for as long as he's on the big league roster. If he looks like crap in spring training, they cut him and don't owe him anything.

What's surprising is that it appears Toronto just cut him without even gauging interest around the league-in hindsight, they probably could've got some $$$ back to cover his dead money.

Exactly, there is literally zero risk signing a player to the vets minimum

Let's not get carried away. Ellsbury has averaged a whopping 10 more games played per year over the last 4 years.
Looks like the Yankees could have two key pieces to form an All Brittle Team in 2019......Greg Bird could make it three if he keeps it up....

Great deal, low risk, high reward. He can act as a super utility/DH and if he sucks who cares.
