Here is the question.

Are you willing for the Blazers to continue to suck short term in order to maybe contend for a championship in 5 years?

or

Would you prefer we stay mediocre and at least somewhat competitive indefinitely, but never contend for a championship?

You can't do both.

YOU CAN'T DO BOTH!!!!

Teams that try to do both are trapped in the middle of the NBA standings and that's the worst place to be.

Problem is that most Blazer fans I know are content with the Blazers just being average. They don't covet a championship as much as fans on the east coast. I guess it's that passive NW attitude. I can't relate to that.

Cleveland is desperate for a proven veteran big man to pair with Irving. They don't want to use both their 1st round picks this year to get even younger. You heard the owner at the draft lottery, they are desperate to make the playoffs next year. I think Aldridge is at the top of their list for players they would love to add to Irving, Waiters & Varejao

Trade LaMarcus Aldridge & pick #45 for Tristin Thompson, Alonzo Gee and their #1 & #31 picks in the draft.

The Blazers aren't winning squat with Aldridge alone. But we can turn Aldridge into a potential jackpot.

Think about it.

1. Tristin Thompson - he's a serviceable big man that has not yet come close to reaching his potential. And he has already shown more desire to play down on the block than Aldridge ever did.

2. #1 pick - SG Ben McLemore. I know the Blazers would probably take Nerlens Noel. But maybe for once they would take the dynamic wing player over the injury-waiting-to-happen big man. B-Mac would give the Blazers another much needed dynamic scorer to go with Lillard. Matthews & Batum aren't scorers. We desperately need a scoring wing player. The nice thing is that with already having Matthews & Barton at SG there would be little pressure for B-Mac to contribute as a starter immediately. He's young and it will take some time. But evenutally B-Mac would replace Matthews in the starting lineup. Having Matthews join Barton off the bench would dramatically upgrade our shooting guard depth.

3. #10 pick - C Gorgui Dieng. Here's the funny thing. Noel is getting all the hype and all the pressure at that #1 spot. But the forgotten defensive stud big man in this draft is Gorgui Dieng from Louisville. He's a champion, and he has no injury concerns. He doesn't give anything offensively, but neither does Noel. On the defensive end Dieng is the next Serge Ibaka. He would be a great addition to the center position. We'd have Meyers Leonard for offense and Gorgui Dieng for defense. Taking B-Mac & Dieng is SUCH a better use of the #1 & #10 picks rather than taking Noel & ???.

4. #31 pick - PG Nate Wolters. How about an under the radar steal at the top of the 2nd round. This is a big PG (6 '5") that can shoot and run an offense. He's simply overlooked because he's white and played at South Dakota State. But he would be the perfect backup PG. Who knows if Eric Maynor comes back, but even if he does you can never have enough reliable PG's on a team.

5. #39 & #40 picks - PF Kenny Kadji & PF Ryan Kelly. Here is where we add depth to the PF position. We get a pair of nice prospects, one who plays on the inside & and one that plays on the perimeter who can come off the bench as a deep threat.

6. Top 10 pick in the 2014 draft - Andrew Wiggins? Jabari Parker? Marcus Smart? Julius Randle? Willie Cauley-Stein? Noah Vonleh? This is probably the biggest part of the Aldridge trade that won't even be considered by most people. The Blazers have a Top 10 protected first round pick next year. Which means if we finish better than the worst 10 records in the league the pick goes to the Hornets. Keeping Aldridge to stay in the middle of the league ensures we lose this valuable pick. We don't want that because next year's draft is going to be AMAZING!! By trading Aldridge and looking for the future this will ensure we will suck next year so we can add one final very important piece in the Top 10 of the next draft.

Here is the bottom line.

Lebron James & the Heat are winning the next 2-3 championships. Keeping Aldridge won't change that. But going the Oklahoma City Thunder route and building through the draft might put us into position to be one of the top contenders once the Heat's run is over.

2012 - Lillard, Leonard, Barton
2013 - McLemore, Dieng, Wolters, Kadji, Kelly

PG - Lillard, Maynor, Wolters
SG - McLemore, Matthews, Barton
SF - Batum, Gee, Claver
PF - Thompson, Kadji, Kelly
C - Dieng, Leonard
