Not sure a statistical comparison would teach anything on this one. A defense first, with an eventual decent bat vs a bat first with a passable glove.

I think I will wait for some arguments...

OK- Yankee fan here so I am trying hard to not be biased...

Walks- Smith(close)- both were very good
SO- Smith(not close)- but SO is a jeter haters tool, did you know that Jeter was Better than average at SOs, the Average player had a 17.6% SO rate Jeter only had a 14.6 and never had a season above 17.2%
power- Jeter(not close) but not a strength of either since both were below average
BA- Jeter( NOT CLOSE)- this was jeter's strength
speed- Smith(semi close)
playoffs(offense)- Jeter(Not close)- Jeter played 158 playoff games and has better or comparable numbers to his career averages. Ozzie has a small sample size but he was WORSE than his career averages(even if you multiply all counting stats by 4)
Defense- Smith (NOT CLOSE)
Longevity- Jeter(Close) only 2000(approximate) PA difference
Strength of team- Jeter(not close)

in an IDEAL offense Smith is probably one of the best 9 hitters of all time, While Jeter is a very good One hitter...

So clearly offense Jeter wins, and defense Smith wins(which we all knew already)

***NOTE*** ideal lineup is where the player would be batting in a lineup entirely of greats, and every spot is used up by the ideal TYPE of player... DH is included...

This is one of the toughest comparisons we have had since one is the best defensive player of all time while the other is one of the best offensive SS of all time... And SS is one of the positions that defense is MOST important... But I have to give the win to Jeter and it is Really because of the playoff numbers... Jeter seemed to step it up while Smith batted .173 in the WS...
