20 is too high for a dh who is older than he claims

he only played around 20% of his career as DH... and under 5 percent at DH when he played for the cardinals(where his stats are really in question to be voted in here)...

not sure if that is fair to dismiss him as a DH...

My thinking was that after three years of 3b, rf and lf they decided to put him at 1b because he was a great hitter. If he was in the AL he probably would have been a dh a majority of the time

idk... his 12 seasons with the cardinals he was the best player on the team... you dont often push DH on your best player, unless you absolutely have to..

Numerous that you are listing his BA, but the point is still valid…

I won’t credit Edgar because Mariners fans say he COULD have been a solid defender, so I won’t ding Pujols because he MAY have been a DH on an AL team.

He played defense. That is all that matters.

BA might be flawed... but i like it as a descriptor stat... i like it much more than OBP, which includes walks... a power hitter with a good BA is very rare...

OBP is about as flawed as BA. That’s why OPS has replaced it. It is a much better gauge of a hitters effectiveness.

my point was that if you are showing HRs, BA is actually more telling than OBP or OPS...

if you are just looking at stats in general... yes sure... OPS is more telling than BA and OBP...

i actually like showing BA and walks over just looking at OBP.... i want to know where the OBP is coming from... and BBs is a skill...

One of the main problems with baseball today is that batting averages are so low.

It's still the point of the game. Get a hit. It puts runners on base. It drives in runners.

Hits let the game of baseball happen instead of some weird hr derby or strike out version of cricket.

There's some validity to this, people are bored by '3 true outcomes' baseball, one reason they banned the shift.

Yeah, the guy who has more DRS as a first baseman than any other 1B of all time, while playing 17,000 career innings at 1B would have definitely been a DH in the AL. What an absolutely crazy take.

Edgar was a horrid defender.
