Till We Can't Be Beat. WON'T. BE. BEAT.
Nebraska target Toby Johnson wants to be the next Ndamukong Suh. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College listed Suh as his favorite player and the type of disruptive force he wants to emulate when he goes on to play FBS football.
“I’m the next Suh, man,” he said. “I also know he went to Nebraska.”
Johnson has no shortage of offers at the moment and Nebraska joined the list yesterday evening. Nebraska assistant John Garrison called Johnson and offered him the news. The defensive tackle doesn’t know a ton about the Nebraska defense other than Suh.
“They had one of the best defensive linemen to ever play,” he said. “The coaches seem cool and honest.”
The Huskers would be adding a big body in Johnson. The defensive tackle would have three seasons to play two.
“The team will be getting a guy that is a hard working, someone that is coachable and someone who can work anywhere on the defensive line he said,” he said. “I can do anything. People think I can’t rush the passer but I can do both.”
Johnson finished with 50 tackles, 10.5 for a loss, including two sacks on the year. He also used his hands extremely well on the line, blocking two kicks and batting down five passes for the Blue Dragons.
“There are all types of things I can improve on,” he said. “I can definitely work on fighting off double teams. I can improve technique as I’m going up against double teams.”
Early playing time is important for Johnson, because he wants to make an immediate impact.
“Playing time is huge,” he said. “Everybody who has offered me has said they think I can come in and start right away or play right away. I ain’t coming in to sit no bench.”
Johnson will visit Nebraska sometime this summer.
“I just want to see the atmosphere and the facilities,” he said. “The coaches seem cool. I’m excited to find out about the atmosphere.”
Another thing of importance for Johnson is a family atmosphere. The defensive tackle said he has that right now at Hutchinson and he hopes to go somewhere similar.
“Down here everybody is good with everybody,” he said. “Everybody is cool here.”
Following the Nebraska offer, Johnson currently holds scholarships from: Arkansas, Arkansas State, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana State, Texas A&M Tennessee and Temple
