Listening to XM radio this morning and heard Greg McElroy ask Dusty Dvoracek if he thought Baylor was the 3rd best coaching job in the Big 12 behind Texas and Oklahoma. Interesting discussion. So, which one of the other eight do you consider the 3rd best job in the Big 12?

(This might also be interesting for other conferences.)

Well, it's not Texas. That one is now the 6th best

I would take WVU in this scenario. They have a not-so-distant history of elite success, and they're centrally located for recruiting success in the midwest while also having the pull for Big 12-area recruits being in the conference. If I was a kid in the midwest, I'd play at WVU before playing for a team like Notre Dame or michigan.

I'd say Oklahoma State. OSU has a ton of money, really good facilities, a lot of outstanding players over the past few years, close to Texas for recruiting, supportive fans who travel well, etc. Yeah they play in OU's shadow but who doesn't in the conference right now? Their problem is they can recruit some outstanding players at mostly skill positions but they lack depth. Mike Gundy's got a good job and he knows it.

It may well be, Baylor is a sneaky good program in Football as well as basketball.

They have at least sniffed the playoff twice now with 2 different coaches and styles (Texas,Michigan,USC, Florida, that has to hurt)
and their basketball program(s) are very good.

Okie Lite is the one that came to my mind and mostly for the reasons you listed.

As far as fan support, I'd go with Iowa State. They don't seem to be as "fair weather" as many of the others.

For potential upside, I'd say West Virginia.

One of the only things I can think of that might make Baylor or TCU attractive is they are private and don't have to disclose compensation information like public institutions do. I'm pretty sure that's why Coach Hitch'em Up has stayed put.

West Virginia. Close to rich recruiting grounds like Ohio, PA and the DC area and it has been a top program in the recent past

Problem(s) with WVU is they are a little too tight with the purse strings in this era and those recruits in the area have other choices that play closer to home for their away games and that does hurt our recruiting a bit. If WVU were in the ACC/SEC/BIG then it would be a bigger factor.
The money thing is not as big an issue at Baylor/Okie State/TCU so imo that gives them the edge over us.

Kansas.

Low expectations. So just suck and you're fine.

In fact if you're any good at coaching Kansas, they'll fire your ass.

Mark Mangino is the only coach to have a record over .500 in the last 50 years at Kansas . Had a 3-1 bowl record. Fired.

Gotta be TCU.

How many years has Sweaty Betty been there?

What exactly does he have to show for it?

How much money does he make a year?

It is one of the "top two". But, as one poster pointed out, Texas is now the 6th best job in the conference so that blows that.

Baylor but only because OSU can't finish to save their life. Gundy was a very good coach before he got weird and I'm not sure they are going to do better. Baylor has had 2 different coaches take them close and that indicates they are consistently getting the talent right now.

May need to use the past tense if one is going by recruiting rankings. Dead last in the Big 12 this year. May have had something to do with the uncertainty surrounding Rhule.
