The guest bathroom I walked into would have been normal in any upper income house back in the states, but in the shit hole called Mexico, it was a paradise of pampered proportions. Mexican tiled floors are generally normal, but everything else looked like marble. Even the tub. Considering everything that I had seen of this house so far, I was beginning to think that perhaps I should join the cartel myself.

A quick shower due to my own hunger seemed appropriate, so it was in and out, only pausing under the water long enough to wonder where the hell Raul, or rather Raul's flunkies, had managed to get the exotic soaps and body oils on display. Working for the Tuxtepec cartel really must be the best job in the region, judging from what I had seen so far. But that is a dangerous train of thought given the circumstances, I tell myself. Mind back on the present, I grab a bar of Irish Spring and wash tons of grime and germs off of my body and proceed about the business at hand.

Exiting the bathroom, I look around. I didn't really pay much attention to the room itself when I walked in, but now I could see that it looked more like one of those honeymoon suites at a Sheraton. I notice there are clothes laying on my bed, and they aren't mine. I guess whoever put them there saw the condition of the ones I wore in, which were currently balled up in a heap in the bathroom floor. Tags, stickers, and some of those little plastic t-shaped things are sticking out of them, so I know them to be new.

Images of spy movies pop into my head as I wonder if these clothes have been bugged. Little fake buttons near the neck that are actually small microphones have always concerned me considering my line of work. I would like nothing better than to have my own non-bugged clothes instead, but since I only have a few threads that will never do for a hospitable environment such as this, I resign myself to yanking off tags and stickers and getting dressed. The clothes turn out to be comfortable and fresh smelling like new things are typical of being. I put the eavesdropping conspiracy out of my mind. After all, Rockess and I will not have anything new to speak of about "the plan", as if I knew much of it anyway. And the cartel types do not go in much for the cloak and dagger spying stuff. Well, the dagger part, they do, but it's more straightforward. If they think you are up to no good, they just knife you, they do not worry with a cat and mouse game of espionage.

That is, of course all considering the rooms themselves aren't thoroughly bugged. Which I have no doubt they are, so no flogging the dolphin tonight I guess.

I settle back onto the bed to wait for Rockess, who I believe should be along in a few minutes, and close my eyes for a quick snooze until she appears. My thoughts return to that image of her rear end swaying back and forth as she walked up the stairs earlier. And that quick kiss she gave me. I feel a bit guilty about this train of thought, considering Vee's unknown fate, but I am only human, and a male one at that. It doesn't take long before I have pushed Vee out of my mind again and recall Rockess's thigh high stilettos she was wearing upon our first encounter. It was through a drunken haze I first saw them, but I could still see them clearly. I wouldn't mind seeing them make another appearance, I admit to myself.

I must have drifted off briefly, because I came to with Rockess's face near mine. She's sitting on the edge of my bed. As I open my eyes, she leans in and gives me a bit of a deeper kiss than she gave me earlier. I respond in kind, and we stay that way for a few moments, tongues exploring each other. Nice. I can feel the wood in my pants, and she apparently notices too.

Reaching down she gives my oak tree a gentle pat and squeeze. "Time enough for that later, love, I am hungry," she announces.

"So am I, but steak isn't what I am thinking about eating right this moment." She laughs at that and I stand up off the bed and give her a once over. She is stunning, of course. Black seems to be her thing, and I doubt any other woman in the world could make it look as hot and sexy as she does.

"Do you like my outfit? It was laid out for me as I bathed. Brand new, too." She gives me a meaningful look, and I relax a bit. She's is apparently smart enough to know the implications of this and I am smart enough to know I am now fully 100% into boyfriend mode. There can be no references to "the plan" going forward.

"So is mine. Raul is an excellent host."

"He likely did it for my benefit, but don't worry. Once he gets to know you, he will like you like I do. Well, not exactly like I do, but you get the idea."

I laugh and take her hand and lead her to the door. "So, what's on the menu tonight?"

"Raul usually serves a variety of things built around fish and beef, so you will be happy with whatever there is. And dessert will tend to be a cake or fried ice cream."

It sounds good, and we make our way down the hall and begin down the stairs.

"That is, if you wouldn't rather eat dessert once we come back up."

Regardless of what might await later, I tried some of the dessert that Raul served - fried ice cream. Delicious. And Lady was right, Raul tended towards fish and beef - both of which were served by some servant type. He was a clean looking fellow, though, as everyone else seemed to be in this house. I guess the grimey looking cartel employees that actually sell or make shit for the organization is not allowed in Raul's digs. Or at least, not until they bathe.

It was small talk around the table for the most part. Raul had already left to speak with Fernandez, or whoever else he felt like he should talk to. In his wake, a few of his family members entertained Lady and me. I didn't get much attention, as they seemed to concentrate solely on her. In particular, a teenage boy who, I learned by listening, was Raul's son. He didn't seem to like me at all - small wonder. Hormones rage for all boys that age, and to have "sex personified" wearing black at the same table with him made his testosterone levels go into overdrive.

I ignored the boy and paid a few compliments to Raul's wife, which couldn't hurt, and I answered a few questions from her politely. I even played a few magic tricks for his rather young daughter, much to her delight, which might also play to my favor. I basically did my best to come off as a non-threat and relax everyone to my odd presence. After that, I just played it cool and kept my involvement in the conversation at a minimum.

Dinner was coming to a close when Raul returned with a few of his toadies. He bade his family to finish eating and to retire for the night - saying he had business to discuss with Lady and her friend. Me. We got up and followed him to another room, followed by a few of his muscle men. We entered his "study" and took a seat at his indication.

"So, I have spoken with Fernandez about a few business matters, and one included you. He wants to see you tomorrow morning, first thing. BOTH of you," he said, shifting his gaze to me.

"Sounds fine, he'll want to hear things directly from me," Lady responded. "Should we have an escort from you?"

Raul pondered for a moment, taking us both in. "Yes, I think so. Furthermore, I think that I will be going along with you."

"That's not really necessary, is it? I would think we would be safe enough - the war is on the Oaxaca homefront, a long way from here," Lady said.

Raul didn't answer right away, just leaned back in his rather nice chair and gazed off at nothing that I could see. I was beginning to get this feeling that all was definately NOT right in Tuxtepec and Raul knew it. While that was our main objective - to cause complete chaos here, it was really targeted at the very top of this food chain. In spite of myself and the job I knew I had to do, I liked Raul and was thinking this whole Organization would be best run by him, or at least someone stable like him.

"Things will be coming to a head in Oaxaca soon, and there is some tension running through the Organization here, it's undeniable. I would just feel better to see you personally to and from the meeting. It may be that you will need to stay, but that will be decided by Fernandez tomorrow. I do not know what further part he will require you to play in this takeover. Possibly nothing. But if that is the case, I wouldn't mind having you, and your friend here if necessary, return with me tomorrow afternoon to wait out the storm."

"Raul, what is it you are not telling me?" Lady asked. Which is exactly what I wanted to know. I was becoming more uneasy about this whole situation by the second.

He again didn't repond immediately, just sort of sat there and mulled things over in his mind. He glanced at me. "Mendozza, since you arrived with Lady, you are essentially in this operation up to your eyeballs. I don't particularly care at the moment what might befall you tomorrow, but you are in no immediate danger that I can tell. More of a curiosity." He shifted his gaze to Lady. "Lady, you are not exactly in danger either, but I know Fernandez doesn't like you. While that is not a desireable situation to be in, now is not really the time that a reasonable person would try to do anything about."

"So is the operative word here 'reasonable'," I replied?

"It is. I myself did not feel safe arriving at his villa today. Something is not right the way things would have awhile back with Bandito pulling the strings." Raul seemed to reach a decision. "In fact, I am about to take steps tonight for my own family's safety. At least until things settle down around here a bit."

Raul reached into his desk and pulled out a phone. He spent a minute punching at a few keys and then put the phone away. I'd give a good deal to know what text he sent, and to whom.

Lady broke the silence. "If the situation is as bad as all that, perhaps we should break off the offensive against El Bolo?"

"No, it's too late for that, or I would agree with you," Raul replied. "The plan is too far in motion and by the time we managed to get word out, blood will have already spilled on the Oaxaca streets. You stay the course in this. But you keep a sharp lookout and watch your back." He looked at me again. "Mendozza, you stay alert when we visit tomorrow and if she arrives back home here with her skin intact, I will be indebted to you. I know you have a bone to pick with El Bolo, assuming I haven't been fed a line of bullshit, but I do not, outside of the Organizations interest. You will get your revenge if things play out, but if Lady dies, you likely will too."

He let that sink in. Did I just hear an implied threat or promise from him if Lady didn't make it back tomorrow? Great, so we're going into a hornet's nest and we really don't have any choice. It spoke well of Raul that he would go in with us, but I doubt he is really in any danger himself. He's merely trying to use his influence to protect Lady. But if his intuition is any clue, he knows things are deeply wrong at the top of the organization, and Lady could lose her life tomorrow for whatever reason he wasn't telling us. And if that happened, I would follow suit soon afterwards.

"She will be fine," I tell him, but it's myself I am trying to convince. I would sneak out of here tonight if it wasn't for Vee, sexy Lady or no. "I will do what I can to get her back here. I still want a crack at El Bolo, or at least be around when he falls."

I glance at Lady, and she doesn't seem to be as confident as she did earlier. "His behavior is more erratic, isn't it?" she asked Raul.

"Yes, but all the more reason to do what he says for now. You do what needs doing now, and then lay low until the dust settles." Raul stood and motioned to the door, "Good night Lady, until tomorrow."

She stood, kissed him on the cheek, and turned toward the door. I got up to follow her.

"A moment longer, if you please, Mr. Mendozza......"

I sit back down, the leavings of my meal laying in front of me, a t-bone and some fat trimmings with a few spud crumbs on the side. I would give anything right at this moment to trade places with the spud crumbs.

"Sure, Raul, what do you need?", I reply. My mind wanders to all sorts of impending danger scenarios.
Raul took a sip of water and placed his glass back down. He searched in his pockets for a few moments and produced a lighter and proceeded to fire up a cigar. The damn thing stank it up in the room rather quickly.

"You are going to be with the Lady tomorrow more than will I, I believe. In that time, I think you can be sure that you will be questioned at length as to your role in this entire matter. It is my opinion and demand that you should pretend to be everything that you claim to be. You stick to the idea, even more than you have, to be a devoted lover to the Lady. I believe that this will allow you to be with her most of the time. Do you understand what I am saying to you?"

"Yes. I actually think I do," I respond. This guy was smart as hell, didn't buy our little attempts at subterfuge at all. "Would you like me to do anything specific other than to hover near her and simply do whatever she likes?"

"No. you are to do that and only that for now. If anything changes, I will let you know." Raul got up to leave and he then suggested I do the same. "Get plenty of rest, tomorrow's game will determine a lot of things. Whether Lady dies, whether you die, whether we all die. Either way, it will probably play out to the benefit of El Bolo, I can't help but think." He gave me a half smile, and turned to the stairs.

Something here stinks. I suspect his call earlier had to do with getting his family out of here. And I would give alot to know the destination, but that would have to wait. But to be so non-chalant about who he thought might actually win this war would go a long way into why he thought he might need to evacuate his family in a stronghold that he thought of as his own. And why he thought he, himself, might die. This wasn't going well at all, or at least within the alliances that I expected. Not only is Raul not fooled by our charade, but he is also seemingly indifferent to how it all plays out, even if it plays out to the benifit to El Bolo. What is the answer here, and how can I get this guy to help us without coming out and saying it, since it is obvious that he is at least ambivalent to the outcome? It's almost like he is actually rooting for a more El Bolo friendly outcome.

"Raul!" I called. "Wait a moment, what if we could consider a more reasonable outcome to this entire affair?"

He stopped, turned, and I saw a glimmer of interest in his eyes. "What other outcome is there? Either Eduardo dies and we MIGHT win another market, Fernandez dies and we hold our own, or both die and we hold our own.

I replied, "Why does Fernandez want to get hold of El Bolo's area? He has no hatred, does he? Are you aware of any general beef he has with Eduardo? The question I am asking is "Why take over Oaxaca?" With the riches and money that comes in from holding even the smallest cartel province in Mexico, why would any boss want more? What is there to gain by trying to take out another faction, especially if you have only recently arrived at your own? And let's be honest, these aren't actually "rival" factions. These are more like co-workers. So why do it? And why enrage all of the other remaining factions in doing so?"

He looked thoughtful for a moment, then turned back to the stairs. "Fernandez has his own reasons, and they do not concern you. You be ready tomorrow and watch Lady's back, because if you don't, you better pray that Fernandez's men kill you themselves. I have my own ways of dealing with those who disappoint me."

I had almost had him there. I was betting that both cartels would be more inclined to a Raul cartel than a Fernandez cartel. I would have to try harder in the morning to plant this idea in his head. Perhaps it would only take a little more effort to get him to make his own move. I believed, on the surface, and given what Lady and Eduardo had already told me that this would be acceptable to El Bolo. That, as I saw it, was my only way out, because it seemed like Fernandez was paranoid. And getting one over on a paranoid person is almost impossible. They are watching for it. So if you can hit them from one of the few directions that they halfway trust.....

Took me two years to get around to reading this but very well done. This story's getting real good, can't wait for the next installment
