I'm on the first season

enjoy the ride

the first 4 seasons are magnificent, and then it kind of goes downhill...but even at its worst, it's better than 99% of the shit on network tv.

Just finished it. Started it about 2 months ago. Not sure what the hell happened at the end. I don't want to spoil it and I'm not sure how to use spoiler tags- so if anyone wants to give it a shot please do. 86 episodes to end like that. Have to admit I really hated him too. Loved his family though. I've read many opinions saying it's the best tv drama ever. I'm not one to agree. Thought it was pretty good.

It's an old show by now. No need spoilers

Tony got killed. Supposedly the man that went into the bathroom is the one that comes out and kills him. The reason it immediately cuts to black and silence is because its from Tony's perspective (the entire scene is for the most part). So as a viewer, being Tony, you experience death. It's foreshadowed earlier in that season in a discussion between Tony and Bobby when talking about death Bobby says off hand "I bet you never hear it coming. It all just goes to black" or something to that effect. And that's exactly what happens. You never hear the shots, screams, or anything. It all just ends.

Well that's pretty much what I thought until I read where the writer debunked all of that supposedly.

I mean throughout the series , I figured that it would end with his death or prison. The bastard dodged death so many times though. When he killed Chris, any bit of care I had for him went out the window. He got everything he wanted except the shrink lol.

The writers specifically have stated that there is no "real" ending. It can be read however you like. Tony being shot is one theory. The family just having a no-drama dinner is another theory.

I do mot buy into his death at the end because that would completely dismiss Tonys coma, right before he came out of it he had a choice to make while he was flat lining, so death is not a black ending.

Despite my overall lukewarm feelings towards the show, I thought the ending was awesome. Like really, really good. And yes, I believe Tony got shot in the head and died instantaneously.

Watching it like I did 2-3 episodes a day instead of year to year maybe influenced my feelings about the overall show. I thought a few times they introduced a character and spent some time on them and then you never saw them again. Very minor but it made me ask why. Just some examples - Tony's dads side chick that also slept with JFK. Another one was the woman that visited Corrado at his house for two episodes and then you never saw her again. The Meadow- Finn breakup. Not sure when that happened. One minute she was in Cali for Christmas, the next episode she was home. These are minor of course.

I didn't like the guy, but I don't want him to be dead

I am pretty sure the writers planned on having a shot at the movie a few years after the series ended, so there was really a desire to keep options open. So going black and the coma would have worked.

I mean a further movie with the daughter possibly being the woman mafia boss would have been considered a spoof, but after going public with her MS, that was no longer an option.

I liked that it was left open to interpretation. I hope they never do anything with it. Leave it just as it is.

With Gandolfini dead for real it's unlikely.

Seriously though, they don't need to wrap things up any more. Because life would still go on after they did a wrap up. David Milich said as much when he ended Deadwood. Nothing really ends unless you rub out an entire cast.

I rewatched it this morning and all I came up with was Uncle Juniors line when Tony told him he used to run New Jersey, made me think maybe Junior still ran New Jersey. The other thing was thinking that maybe the fans just wanted to see Tony really whacked (rubbed out) in the ultimate hit of the entire series. But like I said, the entire episode was like scene, one line, next scene, trying to leave as much meat on the table for the proposed movie.
