Just when we get some cap room :mad2:

Loser: Free agency in 2026

Speaking of teams looking ahead to next year … there may not be much left to bid on. With McDavid and Kaprizov signed, and Eichel and Connor probably not far behind, that leaves a 2026 class that’s quickly gone from unreal to less than ideal.

Panarin is probably the biggest name left, but he’ll be close to 35 by next July.

Can we interest anyone in the Adrian Kempe sweepstakes? A Martin Necas bidding war? Err … Nick Schmaltz?

Best of luck to those on the July 1 TV panels next year, but it’s already looking kind of grim.

While this is true, if you have enough assets, you can always trade for disgruntled stars on bad teams.
And cap space is an asset.

Yeah, one can always hope.
Interesting that he took a hometown discount.

Wonder how that ripples through the league and will other stars follow suit.
Kaprizov obviously didn't.
From the Athletic:

As impactful as Kaprizov’s record-setting deal was last week, putting a $17 million salary on the board for other agents of elite players to chase, McDavid’s extension will likely have very little impact from an agent’s perspective — because in unison they will point out that this is a one-of-one situation. It’s also why I don’t think players or agents will begrudge No. 97 for not taking more. Everyone gets it. He wants to win so bad. He wants the Oilers to have as much cap flexibility as possible over the next three years.

Now, I can certainly see some NHL front offices holding up McDavid’s extension in future negotiations with their own top-end talent and making the argument that the negotiating player should likewise take less to help the team win. As Chris wrote, that’s just like Crosby and the Penguins and the Bruins’ heyday.

This entire cap culture versus rising salaries in the escalating cap environment of the next four to five years will be fascinating to watch play out.

I mean, if you want to win cups, you play for less.
I think it sends a tremendous message to other FA that want to win.
If your star player wants max money, that only hurts the team.

Hometown discount, and we have to pay a “bad team tax”. The delta is probably $5MM / year.

Only two years though. Lines up pretty perfectly to give the Oilers 3 years to put it together and win a cup while he's there. Then he can sign a monster 18-19-20M per year deal for 5-6-7 years, make his money and ride off into the sunset.

This is a sad situation, I've always said that our best pairing is tantamount to every other teams 2nd pairing. Unless you can find a good trade deal, there is absolutely nothing but shit at free agency I see, and not to many teams are going to part with a strong defensive prospect in their system.

In the article i thought this line was the saddest part about our team.

" Because, in the end, roughly 90 percent of blueliners in the entire NHL would make this back end better"

Hopefully we can make something happen or find a couple guys who can fill the void in our system. Like Sparhawk said, we have assets.

Same problem as always. They lack the high end talent. And don't really have a straightforward path to getting it. Same as at C.

That being said, I do think they can put a decent top 4 together. York/Sanheim was a fine top 4 pairing last year. And I think York at least will see a big improvement with Tocchet. And I think Drysdale and Seeler can be serviceable as a top 4 pairing. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but without Risto their 3rd pair is just embarrassing. Zamula, Juulsen, and Gilbert have no business playing NHL minutes. Let alone 2 of the 3. When I first saw the Friedman quote, I assumed it was a smaller deal to get a serviceable 3rd pair guy. There should be a decent crop of that available that wouldn't be ridiculously expensive. Risto might've been deported for all we know. Guy went from day to day to out for more than 6 months and never heard from again. If they're looking to add on D, that says to me that he won't be back any time soon.

I agree, I'd have to say, like Ellis, We'll never see Risto live up to his contract, I hope they are looking to be moving him first chance they get. At this point might as well play guys like Andre Drysdale and Luchanko. Unless these are some of the guys you're looking to trade.

Andre Drysdale and York are too small to be in the same line up.

Id love to trade guys before they have their value go down as has been the Flyers way of the past.
