Someone in comedy gold thread said first pick in 2009 is out of the league already. So are those overall one picks considered misses at this point ?

taylor hall was injured this year but had 38 points in 53 games, so thats pretty darn good

yakupov had a whopping 33 in 81 games played some in russia since getting drafted but largely underwhelming

hopkins had 56 points in 76 games so not bad as well

Any chance we merge this with the draft thread or comedy gold thread?

I guess the Red Wings will have to do it the old fashion way; scouting, drafting low and player development. I think our last high draft pick was Martin LaPointe at number 10 in 1991. Sure would be nice to get one of these studs wearing the Winged-Wheel.

funny enough the wings drafting in the first round has been atrocious recently. kindl, smith, and mccollum all come to mind. they really needed one of smith or kindl to develop into a legit #4 dman.

Can someone please explain how the drawing actually worked? I was watching cards being opened up from the lowest pick to the top pick. Everything was going according to the calculated probabilities. Then with three teams left (Buffalo, Arizona and Edmonton) the next card was for Edmonton and that was it...Edmonton receives the first pick with Buffalo second and Arizona third. Did they cut it short and jump to the first pick because they were running out of time on the live telecast?

The drawing was done before the broadcast. The winning team was given a gold card while the other 13 were white. They opened the envelopes in the order they finished (17th through 30th) until they got to the gold one.
