always liked him as a player, and i remember his age 44 comeback and a MNF start for atlanta vs the jets in 98 (looked awful, went 9-20 with a pick. hes still the oldest QB to ever start an NFL game)

Drafted by SF in the 10th round, wins the QB job in 1978. The niners draft some kid out of ND the following year, and DeBerg loses his job by 1980, to a HOF QB.

DeBerg signs with Denver in 1981. starts 11 games for them, goes 5-6, has an edge on the starting job in 1983. Denver ends up drafting Elway in 84, and DeBerg loses another job to a future HOFer.

DeBerg signs with Tampa in 1984. starts 24 games over 2 years for them, 6-18 record, 38 TD/36 INT's for awful buccs teams. 1986, steve young takes his job, another future HOFer.

Finally finds a home in KC and for 2 years, plays the best football of his career...at age 36/37.

Question. Has any other QB lost his starting job to 3 future HOFers....let alone, in a row?

Bill Walsh once said Steve DeBerg plays just well enough to get you beat. That is because Steve DeBerg might have a decent game but would throw that awful interception at the worst time to cost a game. He had his chance in SF. Walsh sat Montana as a rookie and DeBerg played but he could not play good enough to keep the starting job. I do think he started a playoff game with Kansas City.

pretty accurate summation of Deberg rally.

he wasnt awful in the postseason either, for 2 teams

denver in 83 (went 14-19 in the game, with 1 of 5 misses being a pick)

lost 31-7, not really his fault

started 2 more for KC, came in relief in a 3rd

1-3 record

3 TD/3 INT

almost 63%, fantastic fort he era.

his best seasons was in KC.
I will always remember him playing with a pin sticking out of his pinky finger.
You would see him grimace with every snap under center.
He is one of my favorite players. Not because he was great (obviously) but he was an ultimate Underdog with a good attitude. I like those guys & usually wish them the best.

He was replaced by Montana, John Elway & Steve Young, then in the end played on a team with Marino when Marino was hurt. He has played with a lot of Hall of Fame QBs.

dude was a switch blade.

BU once had a football program. he wore #11 in honor of the round he was drafted in.
