Irresistible - Steve Carrell as a DC political campaign guru who backs a WI small town, farmer (Chris Cooper) running for mayor after a clip of him at a town hall goes viral. Carrell has designs on taking him national somehow as the type of D who can appeal to white rural America. Jon Stewart directed it. It isn't bad and it does skewer both sides so if you're a conservative don't let that throw you. Jon Stewart is not a director, though. There are some funny scenes and the payoff was really good. But it just doesn't hold together as a complete movie. 6/10

Looks like it is on HBO, I will have to check it out this weekend, along with Judas and the Black Messiah.

News of The World - I'm sure you all have seen the ads. Tom Hanks in 1870 as a former confederate officer in Texas who comes across a young girl who was kidnapped by Indians as a toddler and he's returning her to her birth relatives. There are many the obstacles in their way, including their inability to communicate with each other.. she's been raised by Native Americans and has different ideas about where her real home is. not great, not bad 7/10

The Rental. 2 couples rent an oceanfront place for the weekend. Relationship entanglements ensue. 2 of them discover they're being watched... the homeowner is a real creep. Jeremy Allen White(Lip in Shameless) and Alison Brie are 2 of the leads. It gradually devolves into a bad slasher film... and a really bad one. Complete trash. 2/10

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood I knew it was about Mr Rogers but didn't know the plot. An Esquire writer is assigned to do a story on him. The writer is a rather angry guy who's known for his hit pieces. Fred Rogers knows this and sets about helping/fixing him. Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys is the writer and Chris Cooper the writer's father. It was really good. 8/10

The Sound of Metal. Metal group drummer (the group is basically him and his GF) discovers he's losing his hearing. Good flick. Deserving of the nominations it's received imo, especially Riz Ahmed as the lead.

Been watching some of the monsterverse movies in anticipation for Godzilla vs Kong coming out next week. I’ve rewatched Kong: Skull Island and the first Godzilla. Still feel like the first Godzilla is the weakest of the three movies. Killing off Bryan Cranston 40 minutes in sucked. Kong: Skull Island I enjoyed more than I thought I would and thought they did a good job of making it feel like a Vietnam War movie.

I have been doing an MCU rewatch over the last week or so. I just finished Age of Ultron.

Surprisingly, much better than I remembered. Maybe that is because it is soooo key to everything that happens after?

Still not certain why they kept playing with “Avengers, Assemble” with no payoff until the crappy, blink or you miss it in Endgame.

Downhill. Will Ferrell and Julia Louis Dreyfuss as a troubled married couple on a ski vacation in the Alps with their 2 boys. An avalanche crashes into the outdoor eating area where they're all sitting. Ferrell runs, leaving his family there just as it hits causing their marriage & family issues to get much worse, though nobody was hurt. There were a couple of decent moments, but given the leads (which is the only reason that I watched it) it should have been so much better. Don't bother. 4/10

Just watched Snowden. 7.5/10

These types of topics always interest me. Obviously it's Hollywood so you have to question the the overall accuracy but you get the gist. I was pleased from an entertainment perspective.

9/10. Avoided it in the past thinking it might be dull. Fast-paced despite it involving theft of NSA CIA documents. Flashbacks were cleverly woven into the story which moved the film along and added to the intrigue. Great acting by Gordon-Levitt. In October 2020 Snowden was granted permanent residence in Russia.

That Godzilla v Kong. Didn’t care for it, except the last 20-30 minutes, and even that I think they messed up. I actually enjoyed the movies leading up to it, but there was just something off about this one. 4/10 maybe?

I think I'd give it a 6-6.5. It wasn't bad but was disappointing. I felt like it was too Kong focused and I was hoping it would be at least even or more Godzilla focused. The final act with all the fighting I did really enjoy.

Yeah the end fighting was good. My only issue with it was...

Godzilla basically beats Kong, the mechanical Godzilla beats Godzilla, so Kong beats mechanical Godzilla? No.
