The way the 2016 Chicago Cubs won the whole thing was amazing.
But would it make the top sporting events ever?

Secretariat at the Belmont

Bob Beamon's long jump in the 1968 Olympics

Usain Bolt's 100 meter dash........9.58

The 2012 Ryder Cup at Medina .........

The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team beats the Russians

Chamberlain scores 100 points in NBA game

Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak

Tiger Woods wins the 1997 MASTERS by 12 strokes at the age of 21

Jim Thorpe.........anything he did

EMMITT SMITH breaks the All Time NFL rushing record

Great and all.. but living about 0.6 miles from Wrigley I can't wait for this to be over. STFU HELICOPTERS! Jesus, there's like 7 of the fuckers all over the place, like wasps. Feels like I'm in a warzone.

Like who the FUCK cares at this point? We won, it was epic, there was a Weds. night of celebrating from 11PM to 8AM. K, IT'S DONE!

I'll be so glad when the parade is over today. The stupid helicopters can go cover murders and crimes in the South side where they belong.

The Cubs winning the World series is great for Cubs fans. That's about as far as that goes.

It makes a nice story for the Cubs to finally win the Series, but that's about it.

As far as great sporting events, IMO nothing can top the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

It was a horribly played and managed game.

It doesn't even touch

Game 7 in 2001, 1997 or 1991.

So if it's no the best Game 7 in 25 years, it certainly isn't the best sporting event ever.

It was a good game for sure, great to see the Cubs win but to me best sporting event in history is the Thrilla in Manilla.

That Boise State College football game about ten years ago where they ran every trick play ever invented and they all worked! It was awesome!

Gibby Home Run

Dolphins /Chargers playoff game in the 1980's. Miami pulled off the hook and lateral to perfection , but also Kellen Winslow had like 13 catches for 200 yards and then blocked a last minute fg try by Phins with his pinky

As a fellow Canuck, I too remember Paul Henderson's heroics. 1980 "Miracle on Ice" right up there with that as well.
The Thrilla in Manila is definitely one of my all time favorites
Nicklaus 86 Masters win. The Golden Bear roars one last time.
^^^ This may well be one of the most amazing accomplishments in sports history and one of my favorite fan moments ever.
The Secretariat win is up there too.

As for the Cubs win, historic, yes. But historic doesn't necessarily translate into great. Joe Carter and 93 was somewhat historic but it wasn't great by any standard. The 2016 WS to me wasn't even the greatest WS, although quite entertaining.

Arguably, Miracle of Ice is the most dramatic team sport ever.
I saw the 1971 Gold Cup at Madison and that was a big deal in boat racing.
NC State winning the NCAA was pretty powerful, over Phi Slamma Jamma.

You always have to consider an event in the context it happens.
108 years........the pressure put on the players by the media and fans.
And the TV ratings were better than the the other AMERICA'S TEAM.
Who would ever think that an MLB game would have great TV ratings?

Marvin Hagler--Tommy Hearns-- middleweights-- early 1980's . Just three rounds of each one landing bombs. Hagler got cut and bloodied in first round and knew the refs would stop it if he didn't respond quickly, and he did. Youtube it. Awesome.
