Let's face it, Thanasis Antetokounmpo didn't make it in the NBA. He had a go with the Knicks in 2015-16 and couldn't get traction in that sad rotation.

It's no coincidence that he has been on the Bucks for the last two years with his brother Giannis. Yes, it likely keeps Giannis happy having his brother close, but let's face it, it's a way to slip him an extra $1.7M/year. Sure, Thanasis can play some off the deep bench and the Bucks do need to fill out the roster, so there is nothing wrong with it. But his contract is up this season and I'd be surprised if he has interest anywhere else, since he has below pedestrian numbers and at 28 is not going to get better. But if Giannis can bring home a ring will the Bucks sign his brother for just the league minimum again or will the brother bonus for Giannis be larger?

However, he is closer to his brother in Los Angeles.

By that token, somebody else going to offer the full MLE if it improves their odds of landing Giannis in a few years

That wouldn't look fishy at all, offering a 32 year old deep bencher the full MLE:suds:

Steph and Seth Curry (brother/father), Thanasis Antetokounmpo (brother), Austin Rivers (father), David Stockton (father)…

We could add non-relatives like Moses and Karl Malone, two players with Bogdanovich last names but not related, and others (the more common the last name, the more on the team).

He's actually a useful energy guy in limited bursts, like Lou Amundson used to be. Most Bucks fans I know would rather it be him getting Teague's minutes.

I'm not sure comparing him to a 33 year old backup that plays a completely different position and roll is helping make the case. Energy guys for a few minutes a game and garbage time are a dime a dozen. Can you honestly say he would be on the team if his last name wasn't ANTETOKOUNMPO with a straight face? He couldn't keep a spot on the Knicks!

Not sure why it matters. The Lakers have Kostas on their roster. He's only 23, so the Lakers can claim to be "developing him". But imo, the real reason is the possibility of going after Giannis in the future.

End of the day, if keeping him on the end of the bench keeps Giannis happy...it's worth the money.

For the Lakers its a potential investment in the future opportunity for Giannis and an outside chance that Kostas may develop into a rotation player since he is only 23.
For the Bucks its a way to funnel bonus money to Giannis.
