i know we all hate it, and that's been discussed over and over.. but anybody else think there has been a ridiculous amount of them this year? All 3 games last night went past regulation. There are 12 teams with 9+ OT losses, included 4 in double digits.

223 games have gone past regulation

Yea, it is a little ridiculous. I love the shootout, and dont think you should get rid of it. Its either the loser gets no points, or do the 3-2-1 point system. Neither will happen, so why complain?

So far, the % is about the same or lower than it was last year, based on some quick math.

There were 301 3-point games last year, or approximately 24.47% of games.

So far this year, at 223 OT games, using an average of 66 games played per team (didn't want to add them all up, which is why I say close to or below last year), is 22.52%.

About 22.93% in 2008-2009 also.

Too lazy to do any more math than that.

Darkstone - little help here? :D

Gary loves it ... it bunches all teams together so it looks like everyone has a chance at the playoffs but at the same time if there are 3 or 4 teams above your team in the standings fighting for that final playoff spot ... your chances are slim

I really do enjoy the shootout, but to get rid of the 3 points, I would do this. Its just retarded. A tie is a tie, I can see getting a point for that, but to get a point to lose, is just dumb.

i like the 3-2-1 system.. 3 for reg. win, 2 for OT win, 1 for OTL.. that way teams don't get all conservative with 5 mins left in the 3rd to make sure they get at least one, which i believe is the problem

and that % is way too high IMO.. 25%-ish of games shouldn't go to OT

i would make it 3 points for an OT win and 0 for an OT loser too ... to give teams incentive to finish it in OT ... when they are still playing actual hockey and not some skills competition

2 points for the shootout win and 1 for the shootout loss

I think this would have the opposite effect.

Unless a team was REALLY desperate for points, they're going to play ultra-conservative for 5 minutes to avoid losing that point that they get by going to the SO.

No team should get a shootout loser point in a TEAM sport. That's my opinion. Regulation, yes OT yes but not a SO loss.

Get rid of the shoot-out.
Five minute OT, five-on-five, four-on-four, I don't care.
Two points for a win, whether in regulation or OT.
No points for a loss, whether in regulation or OT.
No points for a tie at the end of OT, for either team.

Yes, I know, that makes no sense. How can a TIE be worth the same as a LOSS? I'll tell you. Because the league wants to discourage ties. Because it thinks ties are boring. To me, I agree that "ties are boring", so all I'm doing is taking that idea all the way. If you want to devalue ties, give them no value.

You want to see intense hockey? Imagine two teams tied at the end of a game, knowing that if they don't score, they lose. You think they won't go for it? You think the game won't open up? If you want to get the ties out of the game, the solution is not to throw around extra points at the end of the game. The solution is to make ties painful.

Nate, that still have the same problem as the current system.
Games should all be worth the same amount of points, whether that's 3 pts or 2 (or whatever)
