Tennessee Vols freshman report: Florida game

After playing 16 true freshmen a week earlier in a 55-10 win over Western Carolina, Tennessee coachButch Jones’ staff used just 10 true freshmen Saturday in the Vols’ 28-27 loss to Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

Freshman wide receiver Jauan Jennings was replaced in the starting lineup by senior Von Pearson after starting Tennessee’s first three games. But Jennings, a former quarterback, received plenty of playing time off the bench and threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to starting quarterbackJoshua Dobbs on a double pass.

Jennings also was on the receiving end of one of the Vols’ two completions to wide receivers, catching a 1-yard pass from Dobbs.

A few of Tennessee’s true freshmen made big plays on defense, led by linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr., who recorded five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack after taking over for sophomore Colton Jumper at middle linebacker.

Kirkland started at middle linebacker in Tennessee’s win over Western Carolina a week earlier, but Jumper played on the Vols’ first defensive series Saturday against Florida before Kirkland entered the game.

Freshman defensive end Kyle Phillips also received extensive playing time and finished with three tackles, including his first career sack. while true freshman defensive tackles Kahlil McKenzie andShy Tuttle each recorded a pair of tackles.

True freshman linebacker Austin Smith, who replaced injured fifth-year senior Curt Maggitt as the Vols’ primary Sam linebacker, made one tackle.

Tennessee freshman running back John Kelly, freshman wide receiver Preston Williams, freshman linebacker Quart'e Sappand freshman safety Stephen Griffin also saw playing time during Saturday’s game.
