Cooley talked about the hysteria around the Shanahan handcuffed the D on Friday. He did not interfere on the day to day running of the defense. He did not attent position meetings. He did not help install the defense.

He did on occasion call for a different defense on a particular play during the game. Cooley said Shanahan liked zone defense while at the same time he given credit for the zero blitz against Dallas a few years ago when they made an big 4th down play. Lets remember that he was the head coach and all decisions are his responsibility as HC. That doesn't mean he didn't make any bad calls but he was NOT ouside his jurisdiction.

We have the same defensive coaches this year as we had last year save for one or two guys. I don't think they are coaching new techniques. Football is football, you either take a proper angle or you don't. Rambo stunk as a tackler last year and he stinks as a tackler this year. Why, because he has bad technique and doesn't know how to tackle. Keenan Robinson by all accounts is having a great camp l... no one knows how he will tackle yet. As a matter of fact I think it was Cali who posted a tackling drill today and the three tackles on there were either not executed at all or the defender didn't make the tackle until the offensive player was past them and the defensive player tackled them as they turned to chase them.

I have mentioned before and will say it again. One difference in Gruden as compared to Shanahan that I really like is his decision to hit more in practice. I think that will help everyone on the team and maybe most especially the defense. Repitition leads to success.

I agree. We don't have the secondary to sit back and play prevent. Defenses today is all about causing turnovers. I have no idea if Haz was handcuffed the last 4 years or not, but our defense this year has strength in the from 7. Reak havoc and see if our ball hawks in the secondary can take advantage. As far as getting a semi.........I understand the sentiment!

Our defense played a lot of zone early last year. We do NOT have good zone defenders. I agree more pressure and man coverage is what these players are better at. I loved London Fletcher but last year he was too slow in both run and pass coverage. I think Robinson could help there.

cooley has been gone for a couple of years . he doesnt know what went on . he can speak to what he saw when he was there . in fact i dont know what went on

the premise to keeping haz was he was handcuffed by shanny

they practiced a rush package and rarely used it . i saw the tackling drills and you are right they didnt do a good job , but was that the par for the course or was it just the 3 we saw ?

the thread started out as , who was having the best camp not who might have the best preseason game which in of itself wont matter much either because the speed of the game is different in the regular season

believe me if players looked bad , didnt develop and they were getting hurt every 5 minutes then red flags would be sent up all over the place

right now the only game in town is TC practice most real fans know everything is relative and TC isnt the end all be all . and that the games will tell us more . we arent morons

the next test is the pats practices and 11 on 11's some will rise and some will falter

so far based on what i have read and seen , haz is doing a good job but it is what it is TC

Skinsdad... actually the premise to keeping Haslett was that the defense failed for two reasons.

1. Lack of Talent first and foremost

2. The head coach interfering with the defense.

I agree with both, and also would add that a poor performance by special teams, and an offense that tended to be non-productive until the game was out of hand had a part in this as well.

Now I realize the defense has not been stellar while Haslett has been at the helm. But I tend to think better talent on the defense, a special teams not that I hope isnt of the forest gump variety, And for frak sake an offense that cam produce points BEFORE the game is out of hand will make most of this a thing of the past. Come February we will be wondering one of two things..

1. Can gruden and RG3 get past the hump of average

or

2. Who are we going to bring in as the new DC.

And I really think if its #2 it wont be because our defense failed.

I've said this before, but tackling is as much as a want to as it is a know how to. A good tackler isn't afraid to stick his body in there and wrap up. This was the knock on Rambo in college and why he dropped as far as he did in the draft. we have seen no evidence that he has the want to. It is not about "coaching" technique at this point. We need players on this team that have that drive. I'm not sure that Rambo has it.

Cooley may have been gone for a couple of years, but he definitely has access to both the locker room and the coaching staff. I guarantee you he knows better what went on than most any other reporters. He still has very close friends on that team.

dad, agree 100% the practices with NE this coming week will tell a lot.

j_y - absolutely tackling starts at the "want to hit." It is unnatural for most to throw their body into another person. Much like fighting, it is not normal for most to stand in front of someone that is going to try to hit, kick etc to you. Funny tackling story, when I played I would hit with everything I had, I had no compulsion to throw my body into someone. There were two problems though, I always hit high and I never wrapped anyone up. They would teach me form tackling etc but I just never could put the hitting together with the wrapping up. You would think if I was willing to hit they could teach me to hold on. Long story short I got switched to offense.

Cooley does have access to the locker room and is friends with a lot of players on the team. He is at Redskin park everyday. He won't know the playbook this year but he is quite qualified to speak about Shanahan and how he coached.

Might seem like I am picking nits but this is the time of year when you DO teach tackling and techniques so they should look good. Unless you were like me and couldn't learn the technique. Same coaching staff for the last 4 years so it is not like they re-invented the wheel. What happens in games is another story. Lastly better players make better coaches.
