The Delaware County Daily Times Blogs: In The Room with Anthony SanFilippo

The Flyers are right up against the salary cap. No surprise there.

They'll need to clear some salary before the season begins, sure, especially since they are only $175,000 below the cap and if someone were to get hurt and they'd need to call up an AHL fill-in, they wouldn't have the space to do so.

They can get enough room with a simple waiver move - or minor trade - before opening night in Boston next week.

Or they could do something bigger.

Excited by the prospect of many of their young forwards - namely Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo, Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn, and even their younger forward acquisitions from the summer with NHL experience - Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek - as well as some players who they've already sent back to the Phantoms, the Flyers think they might be able to move some veteran salary elsewhere to create space.

A Flyers source confirmed for me today that they are "thinking of moves" and that general manager Paul Holmgren "may have (made) calls today."

The hot rumor had them talking to the Nashville Predators, who have about $14 million in cap space.

Could the Flyers look to move Scott Hartnell back to Nashville, a place he adored when playing there several years ago?

The Predators would like to bring in another veteran forward to help convince other players like Shea Weber (restricted free agent after the season) and Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne (both unrestricted at season's end) to stay in Nashville because it would show a commitment to winning on a longer-term basis.

Hartnell has a cap hit of $4.2 million for the next two seasons and could bring back a more inexpensive player in return, or future draft picks.

Now, Hartnell has a no-trade clause, and he could stymie the whole conversation, if in fact it were to take place, but considering how much Hartnell enjoyed Nashville, there are good odds that he would waive his no-trade to go there.

One underground rumor had the Flyers taking back Sergei Kostitsyn, who makes $2.5 million and would save the Flyers the much-needed cap room, but a separate Flyers' source indicated the team isn't interested in Kostitsyn.

While the talk of moving Hartnell is just a rumor at this point, it's hard to find another veteran player on the Flyers that they'd be willing to move that would also interest Nashville.

It should be interesting to see what crops up for the Flyers over the next few days, but it's a certainty that they are seriously considering moving a known salary at this point.

My Hartnell ass kissing days are over, so Id get rid of him.

Id like Mike Fisher, for the obvious reasons...

Well, with the perhaps unexpected strong play of a few of our prospects, you can bet your ass that the Flyers are looking to move a guy like Hartnell. Why? He's now more expendable than ever with prospects just waiting to take his spot (see Read, Zolnierczyk, Couturier etc.) and erasing his $4.2 million salary for this season as well as next would probably help the team more than that of his presence out on the ice.

Read>Hartnell. Fact. Awaz has already pointed otu Simmonds could fight for Hartnell's 2nd line spot. No point in having Hargid play on the 3rd line with 4.2 mil. I wish we were in pursuit of Kostitsyn

Apparently we've already reached our quota of Russians...

So our roster would look something like this?

I actually really like that roster. It gives us some inter-changeable parts but also puts 3 rookies in our top 9(since I think both Read and Couturier have shown enough to get a shot at this point). If this type of trade were to go through I just hope Homer gets some picks/prospects instead of just accepting some over payed roster player who will be relegated to 3rd/4th line minutes and possibly cost our young guys precious experience.

Bryz and Fartsmell for Rinne and Kostitsyn in that case?

They would never take on so much extra salary and we'd want Rinne to sign an extension before such a trade were official anyway. You risk too much having him for only one season although his current $3.4 million is a steal and Kostitsyn actually had a pretty good season last year with 50 points out of only 15 minutes atoi.

lol I was just dreaming. Bryz is not going anywhere with his big fat contract and NMC.

If you wanted blockbuster I wouldve added Pronger and Weber

A first would be a pretty nice add in my eyes, but I tihk Id prefer a winger ready now over putting all our marbles into the young guys' hands.

Still want Kostitsyn.

ALthough I agree there is no way the FLyers would trade Ilya right now, how could you possibly say that his long term deal is a stumbling block. See RIchie and Carts. Or Scott GOmez. It can happen, and it does. And NTC are only so effective...

An NMC however...

The difference between Richy and Carts is that theyre prime players with great cap hits for them.

Bryz is 31. His hit is higher than Fleury's. And no goalie is good for that long.

haha id love that deal for the flyers.. but you are either over-valuing carle and hartnell or severely undervaluing weber if you think a first comes our way in that scenario.. if the first was going their way they might start discussions

i strongly disagree that couturier has shown enough.. he's had spurts where he looks like he's belonged, but he's also had shifts where he looks lost.. and his skating could use some work.. with the way this preaseason has gone, there are 3 or 4 guys that deserve to make the team over him, especially considering the roles that the flyers need filled

i'm very impressed by him cause he's only 18, but he could use another year of seasoning (stupid AHL age rule!).. JMO

This should be interesting though. It makes sense, and I still want Kostitsyn over Hartnell.
