Lou Piniella is joining the San Francisco front office as a consultant, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. Piniella, who retired from managing in August to be closer to his family, will likely evaluate and scout players and advise on player movement from Florida, Shea writes.

Giants GM Brian Sabean knows Piniella from the 1980s, when both were in the Yankees organization. Sabean interviewed Piniella for the Giants’ managerial opening after the 2006 season, before Piniella withdrew his name from consideration.

Also to consider. He was a former teammate of Dick Tidrow, so there's a relation there as well.

Nice. Love me some Lou. Think he'll get some time in the mascot suit? Or kicking dirt on an umpire? I don't know where his skills lie as a talent evaluator, but he certainly knows more about baseball than most people. Glad to have him aboard.

I wonder how much he's getting? Could that $ have been enough to sign Renteria?

Good question. Are those different budgets? Even if they are, money is money, so I'm glad they gave it to Lou. Sorry, Edgar. Though, I don't know why I'm apologizing. If he gets 300 plate appearances in that postage stamp, he'll probably hit 15 homers and sucker some other team into giving him another $3 mil.
