Calgary Flames forwards Daymond Langkow (neck) and Matt Stajan (shoulder) will be out of action for an indefinite period of time, the club announced Monday.

Langkow suffered a season-ending neck injury in March. He has skated with the club during the pre-season, but has yet to be cleared for contact.

The 26-year-old Stajan suffered a separated shoulder against the Vancouver Canucks on the opening night of the pre-season.

Additionally, wingers Rene Bourque and Raitis Ivanans missed practice on Monday for general maintenance resulting from recent training and competition.

Well with Streit likely out for the year he'll probably go on the list as well. That's 4.1 million the Islanders could go over the salary cap if they chose too. Of course it doesn't matter because they aren't anywhere near the cap ceiling. Heck they're only a bit over 1 million above the cap floor.

That sucks dash, those are two decent offensive players their.

I think you need to pull a Jeff Gillooly on Corey Sarich though to have any kind of positive impact :D. I'd normally offer to help, but I've got a lot on my plate already with Huskins and Wallin.

Got any defenseman available?

Thanks for the offer, filo, T.J. Brodie has been quite impressive in the pre-season, he'll probably won't make the Flames to start the season, but he'll probably get first call-up if some unfortunate accident were to occur to one Cory Sarich.

It also appears that a shrink may be turning around the game of Ales Kotalik...

On the rebound: Flames' Kotalik coming around

Yeah, T.J. Brodie, Matt Pelech and John Negrin to name three.

Hmm. The Isles will be looking for a veteran. Sarich IS NOT an option or he better not be. Souray apparently isn't happening either. Garth Snow said his contract isn't a fit for the org. Oh well they do have 7 defensemen on one way contracts. We'll see if Katic or Hamonic is ready. De Haan is probably going back to Oshawa. He needs to play as much as possible since he missed most of last season with a shoulder injury.

I don't think there's any economic / cap benefit of putting him on LTIR.
you need to be at the cap before you can benefit from LTIR replacement.
Nucks will drop Salo on there to get back under the cap.
Last I heard from Gillis, he was sure if Salo would be back at all.

if you are looking for a D-man, I'm still hoping Bieksa is for sale.
Hell, we don't even need a roster player back.

Hamonic looks ready to me...

I really think going into camp the Islanders wanted Hamonic in Bridgeport. With Streit's injury a spot is now available. Travis has some stiff competition. Mark Katic was an AHL all star last year. Dustin Kohn & Dylan Reece played a bit with the big club last year. De Haan is still in camp as well. Anders Ericksson has been brought in on a tryout contract. As has Jed Ortmeyer.

I like Hamonic a lot. His hitting & toughness would be a welcome addition. Katic is an offensive defensemen so he might have a slight edge because he can run the powerplay.

The Islanders willl play their first preseason game on Wednesday. The battle for the 8th defensemen spot will soon begin.

Bieksa is a good player. I think the price would be more than what the Islanders would be willing to give up though. Does he have a no trade clause? Vancouver isn't going to give him away. Especially with Salo out of the lineup.

before Salo got hurt, he was going to pretty much have to be the one to go to get back under the cap. he's the only $3million-ish guy on defense without a NTC clause.
and he made some BIG mistakes in the playoffs, that I think (hope) that signed his ticket out of town.
top 6 are fine
Hamhuis / Ballard, Edler / Ehrhoff, S.O.B. / Alberts. Rome as #7. Not much room for Bieksa even now.

With our payroll, we can't really take a salary back. So prospects / picks is ideal, and Islanders seem relatively rich in that department.

I know it's still early, but I haven't been all that impressed with Ballard (especially with his skating), don't get me wrong, he's not Cory Sarich slow, but I thought he had better wheels than what I've seen. Of course, he could be saving himself for the regular season.

I agree. I've only seen him in one game (the first one), and he was not good at all.
Oh well, at least he hasn't clobbered Luongo in the head yet.

I watched some of the 8-2 Edmonton win over Vancouver yesterday. Taylor Hall absolutely blew by Bieksa on one play. It was like Bieksa was standing still. I know it's only one play & in a meaningless preseason game but I wasn't impressed in the least. If the Islanders won't take on Souray's contract I doubt they take Bieksa's but who knows.

The Islanders are rebuilding. They aren't going to trade a 1st round pick. In terms of prospects they have plenty. Garth isn't going to trade the top guys though.

F Jesse Joensuu
F Corey Trivino
F David Toews
F Rhett Rakhshani
D Aaron Ness
D Anton Kleymentev
D Dustin Kohn
D Dylan Reese

I think a combination of 2 or 3 of these guys can get the Islanders a pretty good veteran defenseman. Whether or not they need to make a trade remains to be seen.
