Look around the world at the other pro leagues.

82 isn’t just too many, it is way too many.

Especially when the top teams are adding an extra 20+ in the playoffs.

....and you can buy other teams around the world for about $100M. And the entire team including coaches split about $20M a year in salaries.

This is a complete non-starter once you tell everyone how much money they would have to give up per year. Not a single coach, player or owner would think it was a good idea anymore.

None of those leagues have the best players in the world and global markets watching them.

The TV money would honestly probably increase because it would create a better product.

The league can easily have a 72 game season be a thing if they get rid of their ridiculous b2b scheduling.

Would also prevent most or all teams from declaring some of their star players from landing on the GTD status list, or sitting out with sprains, soreness, discomfort or fatigue.

That's part of why these talks about fewer games are pointless and lame.

The owners aren't taking the revenue hit and the players aren't taking the salary hit.

If they ever did go to 72 games, fans would start complaining that their team that dealt with injuries all season, but got healthy late "would have made the playoffs if we were still playing 82"

Here we are with somewhere between 15-18 games left. We know who the playoff teams are. Only a few teams are playing with a chance to significantly improve their seeding.

Half the league is either actively tanking or they don’t care about results of games.

Players resting and teams tanking are huge issues for the league. And if they can’t figure out solutions, eventually it will impact the bottom line.

So let’s start the conversations and actually get ahead of it before it erodes the quality of the product even more.

Until somebody backs such an opinion by agreeing to take a pay cut... it's just idle talk.

But they weren't.. So we can't use that argument. Players are getting paid MILIONS to play a game. Actually play a game

And I gurantee you will a smaller schedule ticket prices and food would jump tremendously

That is going to happen whether it is 82, 72, or 42 games. At about 3/4 of the way through the season you are going to know who the playoff teams and what the seeding is. You will get tanking and resting. Not a reason to cut games.

And cutting games to increase revenue due to increase in quality is BS. NBA fans will pay for their teams season subscription or a league pass. Other fans won't. You won't get the fans to pay more for fewer games and the others are supported by ad revenue which isn't going up with fewer games.

I remember when the NFL played 14 regular seasons games. They increased to 16, then 17 and now are going to 18. And of all pro sports leagues, that one could use fewer games for player safety.

MLB used to play 154, now it's 162 and they allow more playoff teams.

In my memory, the NBA has always played 82 games. Instead of adding regular season games, they expanded all playoff series to 7 games and have added a play in tournament.

All of this was done for 1 reason...more money for the league, the owners and players.

Yep.....while I don't think I will ever see an increase in reg. season games in NBA/MLB like we have the NFL I highly doubt we see the games decrease.

More and more players resting and missing games every year.

Eventually it will affect the bottom line if this trend continues.

Not sure what that point is. Could be 5 years from now or 100.

You can keep trying the "they won't be making more money" take all you want...but that's not what is happening and it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon.

I know people say ratings aren’t down and all that, but there is no doubt that right now the league and players are profiting from the newness of streaming and the value of live sports for all these platforms. The sustainability is yet to be seen.
