The $2million arm is...being converted into a hitter. The big worry when he was drafted? His control. Well, that finally caught up to him, and the Pirates are converting him into a hitter.

Grrrreaaat.

Per Kevin Goldstein

As a high school third baseman, Stetson Allie had crazy raw power and a ton of swing and miss. 3rd-5th round talent.

Yeah this is odd to say the least. He never seemed to get it going, but it seems maybe he should have been given more time.

Most unfortunate. The Pirates' development staff must be REALLY down on Allie as a pitcher to shift him away from the role which commanded first round bonus money when he was drafted in the second round. Appears to be a swing-and-a-miss by the amateur scouting staff.

On the other hand, perhaps Allie has really impressed the development staff with his bat. We could use a few more hitting prospects.

But still.....

I wonder if prior to the conversion if they ever tried to package him in a deal and they had no takers?

It's hard to fault the scouts on this one...most thought it was a good move at the time. He had the speed and power, just lacked the command, and when it comes down to it the heat gets the money. It's insanely frustrating...but still. The good thing is he was considered a good hitting prospect too...not a complete utter bust.

Well at least if he can be a good hitter they are letting him develop vs JVB where he WAS a better hitter and forced to pitch and never had value to the Pirates organization.

Agree, better to do it now, than wait till he is 23 or 24.

Stetson allie was not a second round talent as a hitter. Now hes a random position player with no pedigree. This was a fail.

Agree, it is a failure, but he wasn't a nobody as a hitter. A couple of the prospect guys said he was a 3rd to 5th round selection as a hitter, which isn't too bad.

It could be a lot worse.

Don't get me wrong I totally agree, just trying to find a silver lining in all of this and it is the fact they are changing him now vs when it is too late.
