Well, I guess he's suddenly available. No doubt our secondary could use a savvy stud vet like Gilmore but I'm not a cap guy so I have no idea if the Hawks could fit him under the cap somehow.

Any thoughts? Want him?

Just doing some reading on the situation and it seems the reason he's being cut is all about cash. The Pats don't have any, and Gilmore wants what he's worth (his words). Any team that picked up Gilmore for this season would be on the hook for between $6-$7M if I'm reading the story correctly. Do we have that kind of cash? And do we want a 31 year old CB coming off an injury?

Hard to imagine any team has 6 million lying around. Especially for a guy coming off the PUP list

Time and time again we have seen you can always create salary cap if you are motivated enough to do it. I have a hard time seeing a team out there with a CB need greater than ours right now, at least in the pool of playoff caliber teams. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but I guess we'll see.

I wonder if one of the ways we'd do so is to cut Tre Flowers & LJ Collier...

Without looking it up on overthecap or spotrac, I can't think you clear too much space with those cuts, especially Flowers. You're probably going to have to do something like convert salary into a bonus for higher priced vets.

Surprisingly enough, I guess Flowers' base salary jumped up 200% this season to just under $2.2M. I am assuming $500k or so of that is already paid out with the first 4 games, so that would mean about $1.7M in relief by cutting him now if I am understanding it right. It's not a ton but definitely more than I expected.

For Collier, who is definitely down the bust road now, but we would actually take a bigger cap hit by cutting him vs just keeping him around.

So the Pats got something instead of nothing. Lets see if a new contract happens ( seems certain) and how big is it? Remember 31 coming off the PUP list. IMO your going to see a old vet cash in for big bucks and not produce up to the new contract. I've seen this movie before.

lol actually had he been released and then cleared waivers I would have loved to have him! That wouldn't happen so it's a meh. yes he would have improved our DB's options but for how much and for how long?
