I know this was discussed in the Wings - Preds thread, but if officials are going to continue to screw up this bad, maybe there is some merit to the 'Coaches Challenge' on disputed goals.

Whaddyagonnado!? The sad thing is without Datsyuk and Franzen playing, this is what we needed to do to beat Rinne last night.

If Walkom hadn't seen Homers number, he wouldn't have made the call. But, he was in prefect position to see the "96"...although wouldn't that also mean he was in perfect position to see the goalie come out and initiate contact?

I bet Homer has had more goals disallowed than he has goals scored in his career...

Been seeing a lot of these calls recently. I thought that it wasn't goalie interference as long as the player stays out of the crease. WTF refs :L

If it's outside the crease, it's a "right to space" call. If a player is standing still and the goalie comes out and initiates contact, it's the goalie's fault. If the goalie has already staked out his space and the skater comes in and bumps him, it's interference. Obviously this gets complicated with goalies sliding around trying to keep good position, players trying to walk the fine line between annoying the goalie and staying right in front of him but outside the crease, and slight bouts of incidental contact. I'm under the impression that if a goal is scored and it looks like a player in front of the net might have been touching the goalie, it's going to get called back. However, I'm a Wings fan and I'm used to Holmstrom getting goalie interference penalties from center ice, so what do I know?

They need to really look at the way these are called - a goal was waived off and a penalty called on a marginal one in the Ducks/Kings game last night as well.

There is absolutely no consistency here; a guy can get completely wiped out by a defender outside the crease, slide into the goalie and get called for interference, other times, guys like Homer and Perry skate within a foot of the blue paint and the goalie comes out and the whistle blows. And then, sometimes guys cut hard laterally near the crease, and the d-man doesn't make too much contact, but enough to change their course just enough to ensure they go into the blue paint and hit the goalie - you see this on stuff play originating in the corners a lot - contact and the puck goes in and yet no call?

These for the most part are all subjective calls, and there is no perfect position to be in to make them for the referees. The way I see it, if you're gonna make the call, it better me more than glancing contact two feet outside the crease - only the egregious calls need to be made.

With that being said, I don't want to see coache's challenges or replay expanded to siuations like this. Hockey is a fast game, and this would just bog it down. At the same time, the officials need to be more accountable for stuff like this - there needs to be a ruling for all marginal calls in a game and the league needs to come out and say the officiating crew in so and so game missed the call.

Also while we're at it, bring back McGeough.

What if they made the coach's challenge count as your timeout?

Yup, I agree with this, if you challenge and lose, there goes your timeout...

/That said, I'd rather the league take the onus to improve officiating and thereby negate the need for a "Coach's Challenge". I just don't think that's going to happen, though.

I don't like it - a timeout is only 30 seconds, a challenge could take 5 minutes. The only way I'm on board is if after an unsuccessful challenge, the head coach gets a game misconduct - this way, I could say, "we'll maybe the Wild are mediorcre, but at least Todd Richards leads the league in penalty minutes"...

The NHL refs seem to have a pretty strong union and don't see them letting this happen. Look at some of the other crap the leagues turns a blind eye to. They still have ref's like Auger doing games and he's a five alarm fuck-up !

like the boys int he war room will EVER make the referees look bad?
not gonna happen.

Like AV said after the last game (Pho) that we got absolutely fucked in.... "No point in questioning the refs, because they will have an answer for everything anyways. whaddya gonna do?"

So that goal got waved off, but in the Penguins/Rangers game today, Callahan was about a foot inside the crease when the Rangers scored a goal and it counted. As has been observed, consistency does not abound.

holmstrom gets his goals waved off because of his reputation. if that was holmstrom in the crease, the ref would of waved it off instantly :yuck:

That's a close one, but honestly I can see that going either way.

As stated though, the consistency is the issue since you see this type of thing all the time, and sometimes it stands, or times it doesn't.

I guess the issue with review on this is that it's a judgment call whether the player interfered with the goaltender's ability to make a save, not a yes or no like a high stick.
