Translation:

Steelers, "Retirement time, Ben?"

Big Bum, "I don't think so"

Steelers, "Yeah, maybe not for us."

Ben can get big money still if he goes to another team.

I know what: "As we sit here today" means when the Rams HC and GM say it. It probably means something similar in Pittsburgh.

Welcome to Foxborough Ben
I get it. business is business and you can’t blame a guy for doing what he has to do, but man that would be the stabbingest stab to the heart as a Steelers fan. Hell, I’d rather see him in a Ratbird jersey than Pats one.

no team has haunted the Steelers over the last 20 years the way the Pats have

With the window open for teams like the Browns and Ravens in division (and potentially the Bengals if they ever decide to protect Burrow) - and other young teams around the AFC - KC, Buff, Dolphins, etc...The window for the Steelers under Ben is pretty much all but shut.

Pitt would be wise to simply rip the bandaid off this year. Look to get back under the cap, create some flexibility, sign who needs to be signed, and look at 2022/2023 as years to start a new window when other teams will start to face their own cap/contracting issues and closing windows.

To keep Ben the team would need quite a bit of upgrading along the OL, as well as other positions - not including trying to retain their own F/A or replace their production with other capable F/A. When you start looking into what it's going to cost to keep Ben, it's not just his salary, but the requirement of other roster upgrades it would take to compete - it doesn't make sense. It would end up being a half-assed attempt at kicking the can another year down the road further eroding the roster and cap flexibility for 2022/2023 and beyond for a 9-7 season, or 8-8, and likely no playoffs or 1-done again. Wasting a potential year on rebuilding while other guys would still be young.

Ben was threatening retirement a couple of years ago. Is this the last year of his contract? That kind of number is usually only seen in contracts the team never expects to get to.

Either way, it's time to do some serious QB hunting and development. How many " QB of the Future" guys did the Patriots have, and the year after Brady left they had such a bag of nothing that they ended up with that chunk of shit behind center, and they're no better off than they were a year ago.

Ben’s done enough for the Steelers. If they choose to part ways, he will find several teams interested. But he will need good line and weapons.

I have an avi bet on another board that Dwayne Haskins will never be a top 10 passer in the next 5 seasons. My only concern would be this situation, where he finds himself on a team with a stable organization and is respected. That would be the Steelers.

I'm still pretty confident.
